Rolex Submariner Model Body Types

The generous variety of ROLEX watch models, in general, can overwhelm a novice shopper, even when their search has been pared down to a single type, the Rolex Submariner.

Rolex Submariner Model Body Types
Introduced in 1954 at the Swiss Watch Fair, the appropriately named Submariner was designed with the purpose of deep ocean diving. Over the years, it has proved to be equally at home out of the water and has become the emblematic all-around watch, worn by explorers, athletes, filmmakers, artists, and others across all walks of life.

It held up to the chore of resisting water intrusion to a depth of 200 meters at first, with most recent models withstanding 300 meters. Along with the various mechanical updates on Submariner models over the years, we also have a variety of esthetically pleasing options to choose from.
In this article, we will describe each type of Submariner.

The Black Rolex Submariner 16610

STAINLESS STEEL MODELRolex Submariner Model Body Types

A simple and clean design, featuring a sharp black face with luminescent hands and hour markers, as well as the date. The bracelet is made from stainless steel, as is the case, making this a classic choice. This model was produced from 1989 to 2010. Older models may have a rickety, loose oyster bracelet, as years of friction or polishing have gradually worn the metal down, and their bracelets also have an extra, permanent half-link that is riveted to the oyster clasp.

The Black Rolex Submariner 14060

A very similar design to the 16610, except that it has no date. This “no date” model is favored by many serious collectors and watch enthusiasts for its simplicity. These models are in less supply, so they oftentimes sell very quickly. The Submariner 14060 was produced by Rolex from 1990 to 2002. Never associate Submariner model numbers based on the “no date” variable alone, as the 14060 is not the only Submariner without a date.

Also referred to as the “The Hulk”. This Submariner model is a green version of the aforementioned 116610, as it features a green bezel and Glidelock clasp. This particular Submariner differs from the standard 16610 only in a few key areas to be found on the watch dial and bezel. The most apparent change is the color of the Rolex green bezel insert which is used on the 16610LV instead of the standard-issue black bezel insert. A new “Maxi Dial” shows white gold markers which are larger in diameter as well. Only produced between 2003 and 2010 in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner, this model is scarcely on the market.

Features a waterproof 40mm stainless steel case, signature screw-down crown, and a handsome black dial with white Luminova hour markers. But the most poignant difference here is the intra-smooth and scratch-resistant black ceramic bezel. It has a long-lasting sheen which makes the watch look like it was just polished. Maxi dial, along with a recent innovation from Rolex, the marvelous Glidelock clasp. This “Submariner Ceramic” has been in production from 2010 – the present day (2013).
