In its most recognizable form, the watch combines conventional hour and minute hands with an additional 24-hour GMT hand and either a fixed or rotating 24-hour scale.

The standard hour and minute hands display local time. The additional GMT hand completes one full revolution every 24 hours, pointing to a 24-hour scale to indicate a second reference time. On watches equipped with a rotating 24-hour bezel, the same system may also be used to read a third time zone. Rolex describes the GMT-Master II according to this same principle: conventional hands show local time, while the arrow-tipped 24-hour hand makes one circuit of the dial every 24 hours.

Originally associated with pilots and international travel, the GMT complication remains one of the most practical functions in modern watchmaking.

What Does GMT Mean on a Watch?

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time.

Greenwich, England, and the Royal Observatory occupy an important place in the history of global timekeeping. In 1884, the International Meridian Conference established an international prime meridian passing through Greenwich, providing a common geographical reference that became fundamental to navigation and global timekeeping.

Greenwich Mean Time itself is based historically on the mean solar time at Greenwich. The Royal Observatory remains closely associated with both GMT and the Prime Meridian.

Today, Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, is the international reference time scale. Technically, UTC and GMT are not defined in exactly the same way, but for ordinary civilian timekeeping their difference is insignificant. NIST notes that GMT and UTC may effectively be treated as equivalent when fractions of a second are not important.

The term GMT nevertheless remains firmly established in watchmaking.

What Is a GMT Watch?

A GMT watch is a timepiece designed to display at least two time references simultaneously.

Most traditional GMT watches use four principal hands:

Hour hand: displays the local hour on a conventional 12-hour scale.

Minute hand: displays the minutes.

Seconds hand: displays the seconds.

GMT or 24-hour hand: displays another time reference against a 24-hour scale.

The critical difference is the speed of the additional hand.

A conventional hour hand completes two revolutions of the dial every 24 hours. The GMT hand completes only one revolution every 24 hours. This allows the wearer to distinguish immediately between AM and PM in the second time zone.

For example:

If the regular hour and minute hands show 10:10, they indicate local time in the conventional 12-hour format.

If the GMT hand points to 16 on the 24-hour scale, the second time zone is 16:10, or 4:10 PM.

This simple relationship is the foundation of reading virtually every traditional GMT watch.

How to Use a GMT

How a GMT Watch Works

Reading a GMT watch becomes straightforward once each display is understood.

1. Read the Local Time

First, ignore the GMT hand.

Read the conventional hour and minute hands exactly as on any standard watch.

If the hour hand points to 10 and the minute hand points to 2, the local time is 10:10.

2. Find the GMT Hand

Next, identify the fourth hand.

It is usually visually differentiated from the other hands through a contrasting color, an arrow-shaped tip, or another distinctive design.

On the Rolex GMT-Master II, for example, the 24-hour hand features a triangular tip designed specifically to point toward the graduated 24-hour bezel.

3. Read the 24-Hour Scale

Instead of reading the GMT hand against the normal 1-to-12 hour markers, follow its tip to the 24-hour scale.

If the GMT hand is pointing to 18, the reference time is 18:00, or 6:00 PM.

If it points to 6, the reference time is 06:00, or 6:00 AM.

That is why the 24-hour format is particularly useful: there is no ambiguity between morning and evening.

An Easy GMT Watch Example

Consider a traveler whose regular hands show:

10:10 AM local time

The GMT hand points to:

16 on the 24-hour scale

The watch therefore displays:

Local Time: 10:10 AM
Reference Time: 4:10 PM

The minute value remains the same for most full-hour time zones, while the GMT hand supplies the second hour and indicates whether that time falls in the morning or evening.

Some global time zones differ by 30 or 45 minutes rather than a complete hour. These require additional attention when setting the watch.

It is also important to confirm current daylight-saving rules before setting a second location. This means a traveler can land in another city, move the local hour hand to the new time zone and leave the home reference time undisturbed.

TUDOR uses a similar system on its GMT watches. Its instructions specify setting the conventional time first and then independently moving the 24-hour hand to the required second time reference.

Flyer GMT vs. Caller GMT

The difference can therefore be summarized simply:

GMT Type

Independently Adjustable Hand

Best Suited For

Flyer / Traveler GMT

Local 12-hour hand

Frequent international travel

Caller / Office GMT

24-hour GMT hand

Monitoring another location

Standard Dual-Time Use

Varies by movement

Tracking two time zones

Neither system is inherently superior.

A frequent traveler may prefer a Flyer GMT because arriving in a new country requires changing only the local hour.

Someone coordinating international business from a fixed location may find a Caller GMT equally practical because the remote time zone can be changed without disturbing local time.

How to Use a GMT Bezel

Many GMT watches include a bidirectional rotating bezel marked from 1 to 24.

The bezel works together with the GMT hand.

In its standard position, the GMT hand is simply read against the normal 24-hour graduations.

Rotating that bezel changes the scale beneath the GMT hand. This makes it possible to temporarily calculate another time zone without changing the movement itself.

Seiko’s official instructions, for example, specifically describe using a rotating 24-hour bezel to display an additional time zone and demonstrate how three time zones can be read when the regular hands, GMT hand and rotating bezel are used together.

How to Read Three Time Zones With a GMT Watch

A properly configured GMT watch with a rotating 24-hour bezel can potentially display three time zones:

Time Zone 1 — Local time
Read from the normal hour and minute hands.

Time Zone 2 — Reference time
Read from the GMT hand against its standard 24-hour scale.

Time Zone 3 — Additional time
Temporarily rotate the 24-hour bezel according to the difference between the reference location and the third location.

The GMT hand is then read against the newly positioned bezel.

Once the third time zone is no longer required, the bezel can be returned to its normal position.

This capability transforms a seemingly simple four-hand watch into a remarkably effective mechanical tool for international timekeeping.

GMT Bezel vs. Dive Bezel

A GMT bezel should not be confused with the elapsed-time bezel found on a traditional dive watch.

A dive bezel normally carries a 60-minute scale and is intended to measure elapsed time.

A GMT bezel carries a 24-hour scale and is designed to work with the 24-hour hand.

The two may look superficially similar, but they perform fundamentally different functions.

Why Are GMT Bezels Often Two Colors?

Many famous GMT watches divide their bezel into two colors.

The design is functional as well as aesthetic.

The two halves provide a visual distinction between the daytime and nighttime portions of the 24-hour scale. Rolex continues to use this approach on the GMT-Master II, pairing its 24-hour hand with a two-color bidirectional Cerachrom bezel.

Over time, these combinations have also become identifying characteristics of individual GMT references.

Does a GMT Watch Always Show Greenwich Mean Time?

No.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings surrounding GMT watches.

The GMT hand does not have to be set to Greenwich Mean Time.

It can be set to virtually any reference time the wearer chooses.

A collector in Miami could set it to London.

A traveler in Paris could leave it set to New York.

An international executive could set it to Tokyo.

“GMT” describes the type of complication and its historical origins; it does not require the wearer to track Greenwich itself.

Does the GMT Hand Show Home Time or Local Time?

Either arrangement is possible.

On a Flyer GMT such as the Rolex GMT-Master II, a particularly practical travel setup is:

GMT hand = home/reference time

Standard hour hand = current local time

Rolex specifically describes the colored 24-hour hand as displaying the home reference time while the conventional hour hand is adjusted to the traveler’s current location.

A Caller GMT may be configured differently, with the ordinary hands left permanently on local time and the adjustable 24-hour hand used to monitor whichever remote location is currently important.

GMT vs. Dual-Time Watch: What Is the Difference?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are not necessarily identical.

A GMT watch generally uses a 24-hour hand and corresponding 24-hour scale.

A dual-time watch simply displays two time zones. It might use a second conventional dial, a subdial, digital display, jumping-hour mechanism or another system entirely.

A GMT watch is therefore a form of dual-time watch, but not every dual-time watch uses a GMT-style 24-hour display.

Is a 24-Hour Watch the Same as a GMT Watch?

No.

A watch can use a single 24-hour display without tracking a second time zone.

The distinguishing feature of a traditional GMT watch is the ability to display another time reference in addition to conventional local time.

Seiko’s GMT instructions illustrate this distinction clearly: its 24-hour hand can either mirror the main time in 24-hour format or be set to display the time in a different region.

Why GMT Watches Remain Relevant

The smartphone has made checking another time zone effortless, but it has not eliminated the purpose of a GMT watch.

The appeal of the GMT complication is not simply access to information.

It is the ability to place that information continuously on the wrist through a dedicated mechanical or horological display.

For international travelers, it offers immediate reference to home time.

For global business, it allows another market or office to remain visible at a glance.

For collectors, it represents one of the most useful combinations of mechanical complication, design and everyday functionality.

That continuing utility helps explain why the GMT remains one of the defining sports-watch complications.

The Rolex GMT-Master II and the Modern GMT Watch

Few watches are more strongly associated with the GMT complication than the Rolex GMT-Master and GMT-Master II.

The modern GMT-Master II combines conventional local time with an independently adjustable local hour hand, a separate 24-hour hand and a bidirectional 24-hour bezel. Rolex states that this configuration allows two time zones to be displayed simultaneously while enabling travelers to alter local time without disturbing the watch’s minute, second or reference-time displays.

This architecture has helped establish the visual language now associated with the modern luxury GMT watch: a highly legible fourth hand, 24-hour bezel and unmistakably travel-oriented functionality.

Rubber Straps for the Rolex GMT-Master II

A GMT watch is designed around movement.

Travel introduces changes in climate, temperature, humidity and daily activity, making comfort and secure wrist fit particularly important.

Rubber B manufactures Swiss-Made vulcanized rubber straps engineered specifically for compatible Rolex GMT-Master and GMT-Master II references.

Rather than relying on a universal attachment, compatible Rubber B configurations use Blocked Integration™, incorporating solid inserts engineered around the geometry of the GMT case to create a flush, motionless connection between watch and strap.

The Rubber B GMT collection includes configurations developed for both ceramic and earlier non-ceramic GMT references, with different closure systems and strap constructions available according to the watch reference.

Compatibility should always be confirmed using the exact watch reference before selecting a strap.

Frequently Asked Questions About GMT Watches

What does GMT stand for on a watch?

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, the historic time reference associated with the Royal Observatory at Greenwich and the Prime Meridian. The 24-hour hand provides a permanent reference to another location. A rotating GMT bezel can extend that functionality to a third time zone.

Understanding the watch requires only three principles:

Read the standard hands for local time.

Read the GMT hand against the 24-hour scale for reference time.

Use the rotating bezel, when provided, to calculate an additional time zone.

Whether used aboard an aircraft, between international offices or simply as part of a collection, a GMT watch combines global timekeeping with mechanical clarity in a form that can be read instantly from the wrist.

For compatible Rolex GMT-Master and GMT-Master II references, Rubber B Swiss-Made vulcanized rubber straps provide a model-specific alternative engineered to preserve secure case integration while complementing the travel-oriented character of the GMT.

Follow us on Instagram

A GMT watch allows the wearer to track more than one time zone from the wrist.
