Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25th<\/sup>, 1947 in Pinner, Greater London, England to Stanley, a career military officer, and Sheila, a homemaker. Both of his parents were musically inclined and often brought home records for their young son to listen to, exposing him to a wide variety of different musical styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John started playing his grandmother\u2019s piano as a young child and demonstrated a prodigious talent, being able to play classical pieces by ear within his first year of playing. By the age of seven, he began formal piano lessons, and by the age of 11, he had won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginnings in Show Business<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the age of 15, along with the help of his mother and his stepfather, as his mother had divorced and remarried by this time, Elton was hired to play the piano at a nearby pub, the Northwood Hills Hotel, several nights a week. And even though his vision was perfectly fine, he began wearing glasses in order to imitate one of his idols, the late, great Buddy Holly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1962, along with some friends, John started a band, Bluesology, and divided his time between working as a gofer for local music publishing company during the day and playing gigs in the evening.\u00a0 By the mid-1960s, Bluesology was serving as a backing band for a variety of American and British R and B artists, including The Isley Brothers and Long John Baldry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1967, John answered an ad that would forever change the course of musical history in \u201cNew Musical Express\u201d magazine. He was asked to write music from lyrics by Bernie Taupin, beginning a partnership that still continues today and is considered to be one of the most successful in modern musical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breakthrough Success and Mainstream Stardom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration between the two would result in John releasing his debut album, \u201cEmpty Sky,\u201d in England in 1969. Though the album sold moderately well, it was not successful enough to attempt to release it in America, and none of the songs on it are ones that John is really remembered for today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, his second album, which was entitled \u201cElton John,\u201d produced a number of hits, including \u201cTake Me to the Pilot\u201d and \u201cYour Song,\u201d which is still played on the radio and used in films and television shows even today. This was the record that would begin to establish his credentials as an international superstar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John would continue to remain active in the 1970\u2019s and 80\u2019s, writing and recording some of the era\u2019s most memorable songs, including \u201cCrocodile Rock,\u201d \u201cDaniel,\u201d \u201cHonky Cat,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Still Standing,\u201d \u201cTiny Dancer,\u201d and a plethora of other hits. He is frequently sampled by hip-hop artists even today and has spoken enthusiastically about this fact, having even worked previously with Eminem, with both artists being applauded for their efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also enjoys collaborating with younger artists, such as Dua Lipa most recently, and has spoken openly about the fact that, unlike a lot of other \u201clegacy\u201d artists, he loves being asked to collaborate by younger artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of his career, Elton John has gone to release an astounding 31 studio albums, five collaborative albums, and ten soundtrack albums to either films or musical theater projects. He still continues to maintain an active career as a touring musician and is married to his husband, David Furnish, to whom he has been married since 2014. The couple shares two sons, Zachary and Elijah, and when not working on music, John is frequently involved in charity work, especially with regards to AIDS research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
