Who is Barack Obama?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4th<\/sup>, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, which notably makes him the only president to be born outside of the contiguous 48 U.S. states. His mother, Ann Dunham, met his father, Barack Obama Sr., who was of Kenyan descent, during a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His parents would marry later that year, but by March of 1964, the couple would end up divorcing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obama would move around frequently during his childhood, especially after his mother remarried. He would credit this experience with helping him gain empathy for people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barack Obama\u2019s Early Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obama would graduate from college in 1983, with a degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles. He would then move to New York, where he would work in a variety of positions for two years, before eventually moving to Chicago to work as a community organizer from June of 1985 to May of 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obama was accepted into Harvard Law School and would begin attending in the fall of 1988, where he would be selected as one of the editors of the Harvard Law Review<\/em>.  He would eventually go on to be selected as president of the publication, which was the first time that he would gain the attention of the national press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning Years in Politics and Rise to the Presidency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obama would first enter politics when he was elected to the state senate of Illinois in 1996, where he would serve until 2004. In 2004, he would run for, and be elected, to the United States Senate, representing the state of Illinois. He would serve in the Senate for four years, from 2004 through 2008, having to eventually resign his seat because of his successful first presidential campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 4th<\/sup>, 2008, Obama would make history by becoming the first African-American president in the history of the United States after defeating Senator John McCain of Arizona. Today, he is largely remembered for helping the economy out of a recession and for signing the Affordable Care Act into law, which has informally become known as \u201cObamacare\u201d and helped millions of Americans receive health insurance who would otherwise be unable to access it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obama would run for president a 2nd<\/sup> time and once again won his campaign, this time against former colleague Mitt Romney, with whom he worked in the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barack Obama\u2019s Current Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In his post-presidential life, Obama started a production company, Higher Ground, which currently has a deal with Netflix for him and his wife Michelle to produce and narrate content for the streaming service. He also continues to write books as well, with his last work coming out in 2020 and detailing his time as President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
