However, they may be more familiar with his formal title, the Sultan of Brunei. With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Hassanal Bolkiah has become both the world\u2019s longest-reigning monarch and the longest-serving head of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bolkiah is one of the wealthiest men in the world, with an estimated net worth of $28 billion dollars. It may not come as much of a surprise, then, that the Sultan also owns a wide selection of luxury timepieces as well. We will now examine the life, career, and watch collection of Hassanal Bolkiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is Hassanal Bolkiah?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hassanal Bolkiah was born on July 15th<\/sup>, 1946 to the previous Sultan of Brunei, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, and his wife, Queen Pengiran Anak Dami. Omar Ali Saifuddien III played a critical role in Brunei\u2019s history and was one of the main architects of its independence from Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would rule for 17 years, overseeing a mostly peaceful rule and the stability of Brunei during its early days of independence. On October 4, 1967, after ruling for 17 years, he would abdicate the throne in favor of his oldest son, Hassanal. On that same day, Hassanal would be crowned as the 29th<\/sup> Sultan of Brunei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hassanal Bolkiah\u2019s Rise to Power<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Hassanal received the news that his father was planning to abdicate, he was training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, from which he graduated in 1967. Upon learning of his father\u2019s plans to leave the throne, he returned home immediately and began planning for his coronation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tenure as Sultan of Brunei<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under Brunei\u2019s constitution, the Sultan is the head of state of Brunei and has had full executive authority, including the ability to authorize emergency powers, since 1962.\u00a0 In 2006, the Sultan added a provision to the constitution that makes the Sultan incapable of being charged with any crime, thereby making him legally infallible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the head of government, he is also the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has also appointed himself the Inspector General of Police as well. Additionally, he is the Supreme Commander of Brunei\u2019s armed forces as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hassanal Bolkiah\u2019s tenure as Sultan of Brunei has been somewhat contradictory in terms of his beliefs. He has largely been a conservative ruler, placing a great deal of emphasis on Islam, which is the official religion of Brunei. On the other hand, he has also favored more democracy within the government of Brunei as well. To that end, he has declared himself Prime Minister and President. In 2004, the Legislative Council, which has been inactive since 1962, was once again re-activated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
