Simu Liu was born on April 19, 1989, in Harbin, China to Zhenning and Zheng Liu. His father, Zhenning, had studied at Bejing University as an engineer. Eventually, the family would move to Canada, where both of his parents would go on to be successful aerospace engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liu would initially work as an accountant at Deloitte but be laid off after nine months. After that time, he began to look at other career options and decided to pursue his dream of acting full-time. He would begin working in the industry as a stuntman and background actor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simu Liu\u2019s Early Show Business Career<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Liu would receive his first credited billing in 2012 on an episode of the television series \u201cNikita\u201d and make his film debut the following year with a small part in the Guillermo Del Toro kaiju film \u201cPacific Rim.\u201d Liu would continue to receive small parts in television series in his native Canada until 2015 when he received his first primary role as Paul Xie on the Chinese-Canadian production \u201cBlood and Water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year was when Liu would begin to develop something of a following after being cast in the CBC sitcom \u201cKim\u2019s Convenience.\u201d As the son of the main character, Liu was getting his first proper starring role on the show, and it proved to be very popular with Canadian audiences. Subsequently, he saw his profile rise in Canada significantly. The show was also notable for being the first Canadian television program to be led by an all-Asian cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shang-Chi and Mainstream Success<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Liu would continue to work in television for the next several years in Canada until 2021, when \u201cKim\u2019s Convenience\u201d would go on to air its final season. Liu was then given the opportunity of a lifetime when he was picked to be the lead in \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,\u201d Marvel\u2019s first Asian superhero feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie was considered a huge success, as it did well at the box office and was enjoyed by audiences and critics alike. Liu has used his newfound international fame to highlight issues of Asian representation and diversity, as the subject is very close to his heart<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liu will be appearing in several high-profile films in 2023, including Greta Gerwig\u2019s highly anticipated \u201cBarbie\u201d film, alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. He is also slated to appear in the romantic drama \u201cOne True Loves\u201d and a thriller film entitled \u201cHello Stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
