The Rolex Submariner is the most popular Rolex model. It is seen above worn by Ewan McGregor with the oyster submariner band.
Because this is the Rubber B blog, and we are a company that specializes in making high-quality rubber watch straps, you may find it somewhat confusing as to why we are writing about Scottish actor Ewan McGregor. It turns out that he has a rather interesting connection to watchmaking, so we thought it would be an interesting idea to briefly explore that connection and then talk about some of the more acclaimed films that he has appeared in over the years.
What is Ewan McGregor’s Connection to Watchmaking?
As it turns out, watchmaking is in Ewan McGregor’s blood – quite literally. In an interview with Mint, McGregor mentions that his grandfather was a watchmaker. As a result, he has an appreciation for luxury timepieces, despite not being a collector himself. This most likely led to him entering into a partnership with IWC to help promote their products.
As you can see in this video below, in 2012, he actually attended an event for IWC in Germany:
There is even footage of him discussing the IWC event available on Youtube as well – again, you can see that video below:
Now that the connection between Ewan McGregor and watchmaking has been expounded upon a little bit more, we can spend some time looking at some of the more memorable film appearances he has made over his long and storied career.
1. Moulin Rouge
One of the first “jukebox” movie musicals (a musical that combines songs from different artists), Moulin Rouge was the film that turned Ewan McGregor from a reliable Scottish actor into an international movie star. He turned in one of his best performances yet opposite Nicole Kidman, and also proved that he has an excellent singing voice in the process.
2. Trainspotting
Before he was widely known in the United States, Ewan’s career took off in his native Scotland after appearing in this pitch-black Danny Boyle comedy about a group of heroin-addicted friends. Both the film, and his performance in it, were both highly memorable, and it led to the well-known repertoire of performances that he has given us up to today.
3. The Ghost Writer
One of McGregor’s most criminally underseen performances was the excellent one he gave in this film, where he plays a ghostwriter who bites off more than he can chew after being hired to write the memoirs of a former Prime Minister. The character is never named in the film, but that doesn’t stop McGregor from making him memorable.
4. Big Fish
Ewan turned into another truly memorable performance in this film, where he plays the younger version of a dying father, played by Albert Finney, who is trying to reconcile with his son. It is a very tall order to share a character with another actor, especially one of that character, but McGregor manages to do so with stunning ease.
5. Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith
As one of the few genuine bright spots of the Star Wars prequels, Ewan did a great job honoring the memory of Sir Alec Guinness by playing the younger version of legendary Jedi warrior Obi-Wan Kenobi. The ending of this film is a truly emotional moment where the relationship between student and teacher is forever severed, and that’s largely due to the excellent acting on his part.
6. Beauty and the Beast
One of the more ambitious of the recent spate of live-action Disney remakes that we have become accustomed to in recent years, Ewan once again got to put his singing skills to use when he took on the role of Lumiere. The reviews for the film itself were mixed, but most who saw it considered him to be one of the high points.
