In October of 2020, the world saw the passing of one of the world’s most prolific, and respected actors: Sir Sean Connery. Renowned and beloved around the world for being the first actor to ever portray legendary secret agent James Bond on screen, Connery had an acting career that spanned almost six decades and left an indelible mark on both the world of cinema and popular culture at large.

In order to honor his legacy, Rubber B would like to take a few moments to examine the life and career of this cinematic titan. We will also spend some time examining the Rolex Submariner 6538, which is affectionately known as the “James Bond Rolex” among connoisseurs and collectors.

Who Is Sean Connery?

Sir Sean Connery was born as Thomas Connery in Edinburgh, Scotland on August 25^th, 1930. His mother, Euphemia McBain McLean, was a cleaning woman, and his father, Joseph Connery, was a factory worker and lorry driver. Connery was born into intense poverty, and once mentioned in an interview that, despite his immense wealth, he had never forgotten this fact. He mentioned being grateful for even the simple things, such as being able to take a bath, as that was something he was able to do only weekly in his youth.

At the age of 16, he joined the Royal Navy, during which time he received the two tattoos that he is best known for having: one that said “Mum and Dad,” and one which said, “Scotland Forever.” He was later medically discharged for having an ulcer, and two years later, he would begin taking an interest in bodybuilding.

Additionally, in the early 1950’s, he would begin helping out backstage at his local theatre, which was his introduction into the world of professional acting. Eventually, this would begin a series of events that would culminate in him getting an agent and receiving work in films, beginning in 1957’s No Road Back. However, it was his being cast as James Bond in 1962’s Dr. No, a role which would forever change the course of his life, and the world of movies, forever.

After making several entries in the series, he would retire from the official Bond canon with 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. However, he would go on to co-star in several other notable films, such as Highlander, The Untouchables, and The Rock, among others. He would retire professionally from acting after the release of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003, with the exception of voicing the title role in 2012’s Sir Billi the Vet, an animated Scottish film, which would be his final film role. He would live out his remaining years at his home in the Bahamas before passing away on October 31^st, 2020.

Which Rolex is Actually The Official James Bond Rolex?

There is often a misnomer in the watch collecting world that any Rolex Submariner can be called the “James Bond Rolex,” but this is not actually the case. The actual “James Bond Rolex,” is the Rolex Submariner 6538, which was manufactured from 1954 to 1959. Part of this confusion may stem from the James Bond novels themselves. In the books, Ian Fleming never mentions what model of Rolex Bond is wearing – only that he is wearing one at all.

However, during Connery’s first on-screen appearance as James Bond in Dr. No, upon close examination, he can clearly be seen wearing a Rolex Submariner 6538. Because these watches have not been manufactured in many years, they are considered to be something of a collector’s item and can be very challenging to find.
