As one of the leading producers of rubber watch straps, Rubber B is passionate about keeping people informed about as many things as we can when it comes to the world of horology. This means that in addition to writing about rubber watch straps, we also believe that it is important to keep abreast of the timepieces that our rubber watch straps will ultimately end up being a part of.
It also means that Rubber B likes to explore these timepieces in more detail, which means exploring the brands that make them and comparing them to one another. From time to time, as a kind of thought experiment, we like to compare different brands of watches and “pit them against one another.” For our newest entry in this series, we decided to stack two titans of luxury watchmaking against one another: IWC Vs Breitling.
Because we craft rubber straps for timepieces from both of these brands, we can personally attest to the high quality and craftsmanship that both of these companies consistently provide. However, is there a clear victor when it comes down to who produces the superior timepiece? To begin with, let’s look at the history of these companies in more detail, and then we’ll look more closely at the timepieces themselves.
A Brief History of IWC
IWC, or the International Watch Company, was originally founded in 1868 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, which makes it one of the oldest watchmaking companies still currently in operation. It was founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer and watchmaker who was fascinated by Swiss craftsmanship. He wanted to take a novel approach to the watchmaking process by combining the aforementioned craftsmanship with the efficiency of American manufacturing. As innovators in the rubber watch strap field, this is a point of view that Rubber B can very much appreciate.
IWC came to prominence when they were successfully able to manufacturer a pocket-sized chronograph after two Portuguese merchant sailors came to Jones and asked him to create this type of timepiece, which had never been done before. After successfully managing to do so, IWC gained a reputation for crafting high-quality watches around the world.
A Brief History of Breitling
Breitling was founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling, a highly-skilled watchmaker who quickly moved through his apprenticeship and managed to successfully start his own business. However, he would end up passing away 20 years later and leaving the company to his son, Gaston.
The company was also known for producing chronographs, much like IWC, but they were favored by different industries. While IWC’s watches were favored by maritime sailors, Breitling came to prominence in the 1950s with their aviator chronographs, which were inspired by the needs of professional pilots. Commercial air travel was truly beginning to boom during this period, so it stands to reason that airline pilots would need timepieces that they could consistently rely on.
Which is the Superior Timepiece Between IWC Vs Breitling?
Truthfully, and we are not just saying this because we craft rubber straps for timepieces from both of these companies, there are no criteria for determining which company makes the “superior timepiece.” As with most things in life, the answer to this question will be determined by what qualities you are looking for in a watch.
If you are looking for a truly reliable chronograph, or for watches that are more “pilot style” timepieces, then you will more likely require a Breitling watch. If you are looking for something that costs a little less or has a more military/tactical kind of aesthetic, then the IWC will likely be a better fit for you.
