As one of the leading producers of custom rubber watch straps, Rubber B maintains a commitment to not only continue producing quality rubber watch bands but also to help people learn more about the world of horology. To that end, we have continued to use our blog as an educational space where people can learn more about all aspects of horology, from the history of watchmaking to how watches actually work, as well as pieces that focus on watches that we believe to be interesting or notable.
In this entry, we are going to take a closer look at the Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight 925, which was one of the more interesting watches to come out of this year’s annual Watches and Wonders event. As we mentioned in one of our previous blog posts about the event, Tudor was definitely taking some of their product lines in new and exciting directions, and the Black Bay Fifty Eight 925 is certainly emblematic of that. Let’s take a few moments to review the technical details of the watch and then further examine the piece from an aesthetic standpoint.
What Are The Technical Specifications of the Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight 925?
The Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight 925 sees Tudor trying out a number of different ideas, but the overall unifying theme of this timepiece is that it is inspired by vintage watches and earlier iterations of the Tudor Black Bay.
One of the ways that this is immediately noticeable is in the size of the watch, which measures at 39 mm instead of the more commonly seen 41 mm. This is not an accident, but an intentional reference to older watches, which were made in smaller sizes. The 925 case also comes in silver, which is something that has never been available on this model of watch before.
The bezel for this timepiece is unidirectional and rotatable and contains a graduated disc with 60-minute graduations. The caliber for this watch is the MT5400, which is mechanical, self-winding, and has a bidirectional rotor system. It is also manufactured by Tudor and not by a third party. The winding crown is a 925 silver screw-down, and the power reserve for this timepiece is 70 hours. It should also be noted that this watch is waterproof for up to 200 meters.
How Does the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 Look In Terms of Its Aesthetic?
Tudor should definitely be commended for some of the changes they’ve made to this model of the Black Bay, as they were, in our opinion, one of the highlights of this year’s Watches and Wonders event. The reason for this is that oftentimes, especially if you’ve been involved with the world of horology for a long time, it can be somewhat easy to predict what a retailer is going to do next with a certain product line.
Thankfully, Tudor threw us a genuine curveball here in the best kind of way, and the breath of fresh air was much needed. Seeing this watch in silver, with the open back case, through which the movement was visible, allowed us to be genuinely excited about what Tudor managed to accomplish with this timepiece. No one really saw this coming, and it is nice to see Tudor take a model that is not known for being “flashy” and add some precious metals to it in a way that feels sensible and refined.
