A pre-eminent creator of custom rubber watch straps, Rubber B has spent the last several years crafting watch straps for watches for some of the most highly respected watchmakers in both Europe and North America, including Rolex, Tudor, and Apple. Rubber B has a wide selection of colors, styles, and materials to choose from for these timepieces, and all of these straps are made exclusively from 100% vulcanized rubber.
One of our favorite long-running segments on the Rubber B blog is our “Vs.” series, wherein we will compare two watches from competing watch brands with one another to see if one is clearly superior to the other.
This blog post will be a continuation of that feature, but we are altering the formula slightly for this entry. For this piece, we are going to compare two watches from the same company – Audemars Piguet.
This blog entry will compare and contrast two watches – the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph and the Royal Oak Offshore Diver Steel. Last year saw the discontinuation of the Offshore Chronograph to accommodate the production of Offshore diver steel. Is the new watch superior to its predecessor?
What Are The Technical Specifications of the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph?
The Royal Oak Offshore has a case that measure at 42 mm, which is a standard size for this style of watch. The watch is powered by a 3840 movement. The movement is automatic and crafted in-house by Audemars Piguet. This watch has a power reserve of up to 50 hours. It also has a water resistance of up to 330 feet.
How Does the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Fare Aesthetically?
The Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph, like all of the Royal Oak watches, has an extremely distinctive look to it. This is largely due to its immediately recognizable chunky case, which has a boxy, octagonal shape to it. This model of the watch is notable for having three sub-dials on the left side of the main model. That is because the watch is an official chronometer, meaning this feature is not included on every iteration of the watch.
What Are The Technical Specifications of the Royal Oak Offshore Diver?
The case size of the Royal Oak Offshore Diver is 42 mm, which makes it commensurate with its predecessor. This watch is powered by a new caliber, the 3120, which is both automatic and self-winding. This timepiece has a water resistance of 300 meters, which is less than its predecessor.
How Does the Royal Oak Offshore Dive Fare Aesthetically?
One of the major differences between these watches is the way that their designs differ. If you were to put the two watches side by side with one another, it would be impossible not to notice. The stainless steel case and the octagonal, bulky design that has come to define the Royal Oak are still present in this model.
Where the two watches differ significantly is in their respective dials. This newer model does not have any sub-dials on the face of the main dial. Instead, a grid pattern dial with an almost rubbery look to it has replaced the calmer dial of the previous model.
What Are Our Final Thoughts on Two Watches?
In many ways, the two pieces are very similar, which was to be expected. It is an interesting observation that the newer model is not as waterproof as its predecessor. The dial of the newer model is also more austere and feels like more of a tool watch as opposed to something lighter.
Ultimately, the choice of which watch works better for you will come down to a preference for sub-dials and water resistance, as those are the two major factors separating these pieces.
