Since beginning his career in the late 1980’s, Dylan McDermott has become a mainstay in both film and television. He often oscillates between playing dedicated heroes and bone-chilling villains with a charismatic ease that has long been his hallmark. And while many are familiar with his artistic endeavors, the story of his difficult early years, and the adversity he had to overcome, is less well-known.
McDermott has become something of a watch connoisseur over the last several years, so we thought it would be appropriate to learn more about the formative years, acting career, and luxury watch collection of this popular and enduring actor.
Who Is Dylan McDermott?
Dylan McDermott was born Mark Anthony McDermott on October 26th, 1961 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Diane and Richard McDermott. His mother was only 15 when he was born, and his father was just seventeen years old. He also has a younger sister, Robin.
However, by 1967, the couple had divorced. On February 9, 1967, Diane was killed by John Sponza, a criminal with ties to organized crime in the area. However, for decades, this was believed to be an accident. It was not until 2012 that the true circumstances of her death came to light, by which time Sponza was already dead.
In his teen years, he would begin taking trips to New York to see his father, who owned a bar in Greenwich Village. The young McDermott would serve drinks and break up fights at the establishment.
Dylan McDermott’s Early Career
McDermott’s early career was largely jumpstarted by a familial connection. His father’s third wife was Eve Ensler, the playwright and actress best known for her play The Vagina Monologues. Ensler adopted McDermott when she was 23 and he was 15. She would suffer a miscarriage and had planned to name the child Dylan. McDermott would then change his name in honor of the child that his stepmother had lost.
Ensler began writing roles for McDermott into her plays, which would help him bolster his career. He would make his film debut in the 1987 war drama Hamburger Hill, and make his television debut two years later in the TV film The Neon Empire.
He would appear in the 1993 thriller In the Line of Fire alongside Clint Eastwood, but it would not be until four years later, in 1997, when McDermott would truly have his breakout role.
The Practice and Mainstream Success
Despite his long and successful acting career, McDermott remains best known for his role as Bobby Donnell on the ABC legal drama The Practice. The role would catapult McDermott to stardom and make him one of the most recognizable television stars in the world.
McDermott has continued to be active in both film and television, with his most recent film role being that of Will Hodges in the 2021 sports drama King Richard. He recently had a role as the primary antagonist of Det. Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: Organized Crime, where he played fan-favorite villain Richard Wheatley, giving what many deemed to be one of the best performances of his career.
He is currently the lead on Dick Wolf’s procedural drama FBI: Most Wanted, where he replaced the outgoing Julian McMahon.
