Eddie Redmayne has become something of a fixture on film screens since his appearance as the lead in 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” an offshoot of J.K. Rowling’s legendarily popular “Harry Potter” film series. For many filmgoers, this was the first time they had seen Redmayne, but he has been steadily working in the industry for many years and has developed a reputation as a passionate and committed actor.

Redmayne is also a watch collector who is a brand ambassador for Omega as well. With this in mind, we will take a closer look at the life, career, and watch collection of the Academy Award-winning actor and occasional singer.

Who is Eddie Redmayne?

Eddie Redmayne was born Edward John David Redmayne in Westminister, London, England on January 6th, 1982. His mother, Patricia, owns a relocation business, and his father, Richard, works in corporate finance. He began attending the Jackie Palmer stage school at the age of 10. It was there that he would discover a deep interest in acting and singing alongside classmate and future talk show host James Corden.

Eddie Redmayne’s Early Show Business Career

Redmayne actually began his career not in film or television, but in the theater. In 2002, he would play the lead role of Viola in Shakespear’s “Twelfth Night” at the Globe Theater. Four years later, he would make his film debut as the lead role of Alex in the Australian thriller film “Like Minds.”

He would continue working steadily for several more years, including appearing in historical pieces such as “The Other Boleyn Girl” and independent dramas such as “Powder Blue.” He would develop a reputation for appearing in biopics, which started with 2011’s “My Week with Marilyn.” The film was well-received and caused Redmayne to be noticed by film critics for the first time, leading it to be something of a small-scale breakout role for the actor.

His next two films would prove to be some of the most important of his career. 2012 would see him star in “Les Miserables,” as Marius, one of the young men fighting for freedom in the French Revolution. Redmayne did his own singing for the role, which impressed many critics and fans alike.

He would appear on screen again two years later in 2014, playing Dr. Stephen Hawking, the legendary physicist, in “The Theory of Everything.” Redmayne would go on win an Academy Award for his role in that film, winning the trophy for Best Actor.

The following year, he would appear as Lili Elbe in “The Danish Girl,” for which he would receive another Academy Award nomination, although he would not win the award the second time around.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and Mainstream Success

Redmayne became known to international audiences when he took on the lead role of Newt Scamander in the film series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The series is a prequel to the events of “Harry Potter,” and has been very fiscally successful. However, it is unknown if the series will continue past the third entry this time.

In 2020, Redmayne worked with Aaron Sorkin as a cast member in “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” playing political activist Tom Hayden. The film would go on to be nominated for several Academy Awards.
