Who is Elon Musk?
Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. His father, Errol Musk, is a successful South African businessman who was half-owner of an emerald mine. He was also an engineer and a property developer as well. His mother, Maye Musk, was a model and dietician of Canadian origin.
At the age of ten, Musk became interested in computing and video games. He taught himself the basics of programming from a user manual. By the age of 12, he had sold his first video game to a publishing company for $500.
Musk holds two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania – a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, which he received in 1995.
Elon Musk’s Early Business Career
Musk’s first successful business venture was a company called Zip2, which was founded in 1995 by Musk and his brother Kimbal, along with Greg Kouri. It produced online city guides for various cities across the United States. Compaq would eventually acquire the company in 1999, and Musk would receive 22 million dollars for his share of the buyout.
Mainstream Success as an Entrepreneur
In 1999, Musk would go on the found the company X.com, which was one of the first federally insured banks that operated on the internet. The following year, the company would merge with another online bank, Confinity. That would result in him acquiring usage of Confinitiy’s online payment system, Paypal.
eBay would eventually buy Paypal out from Musk and his company, with Musk receiving almost $200 million dollars for his share of the sale.
Musk is primarily known for his two most prominent companies, SpaceX and Tesla. SpaceX was founded in May of 2002 and has allowed Musk to explore his long-standing passion for space exploration.
He is currently the company’s CEO and chief engineer. The company has received a lot of high-profile press in recent years for its space flights. Musk is one of the most visible proponents of the idea of colonizing Mars and further space exploration by humans.
Musk’s most visible role though is as the CEO of Tesla Motors. Though he did not find the company, he played a crucial part in its early development by being its primary investor. Musk has long been interested in self-driving cars and electric vehicles, both of which would make the world a safer place if adopted on a wide scale.
However, while its intentions are arguably good, the company has had a number of production issues over the years, especially where meeting consumer demand has been concerned. It has also been criticized for the mismarketing of its auto-pilot feature in the media.

Musk is currently in the middle of a contentious legal battle with regards to purchasing Twitter, and it remains to be seen what the final outcome of the lawsuit will be as of this time.
