Rubber B produces custom rubber watch bands for timepieces from a variety of leading global watchmakers, including Rolex, Tudor, and Panerai, as well as several others. Our complete product catalog features straps in a plethora of different colors, textures, and styles, and each one of our watch bands is made solely from 100% vulcanized rubber. We also produced watch straps to accommodate larger-sized timepieces, including the largest Rolex watch, which will be the primary focus of this article.
Large Rolex watches can be something of a specialty market, so we thought it would be instructional to take a closer look at some of the more popular Rolexes that are currently available and which have been specially designed for larger wrists. Before we examine those watches though, it is worth taking a brief moment to look at why someone might want a large Rolex watch.
Why Would Someone Want a Large Rolex Watch?
It is important to note at the outset of this piece that for the purposes of this article, we are defining “large watch” as anything with a case size over 40 mm. While there is, of course, no “official” designation of what the average wrist size is among watchmakers, informally, 40 mm has become something of an industry-standard size, especially for men’s watches, over the last several years.
There are, in theory, multiple reasons that someone would want this style of the timepiece, but most of the time, this question can be answered in one of two ways. The first, and more straightforward answer, is simply that the person has a larger than average wrist. In this way, seeking out this kind of watch is not so different from someone purchasing clothing from a “big and tall” store.
The other reason that someone may be seeking out a large Rolex watch is simply that they like the way it looks or feels. People have certainly been known to wear jewelry, especially watches, that are just a little bit too big for them as a stylistic choice. It is worth noting, however, that doing so greatly increases the chance that your watch could become lost or damaged. As such, note that you are putting your luxury watch at risk if you are choosing to wear one that is larger than your natural wrist size.
With all of that being said, let’s learn a little more about some of the most popular larger-sized Rolexes that are currently available for purchase.
Rolex Yacht-Master II – 44 mm
Oftentimes, when people think of “large Rolexes,” this is the watch that they are referring to, and there is a good reason for that. This is arguably Rolex’s most well-known, and highest-selling, of their larger watches.
As its name implies, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a flyback regatta timer and was initially meant to be used during boating races. The timer was specially crafted for the purpose of timing countdown intervals of one to ten.
This timepiece is also notable for introducing Rolex’s Ring Command Bezel system, which allowed the wearer to set the countdown using only the bezel. This feature would later be seen on the Rolex Sky-Dweller watch as well.
There are currently four iterations of the Yacht-Master II available: 18k yellow gold, 18k Everose gold, and stainless steel, 18k white gold with platinum, and a solely stainless steel version.
Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller – 44 mm
Making its first public appearance in 2008, the Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller holds the official designation of being the largest watch that Rolex currently produces. And while this piece and the Yacht-Master II have the same case size and dial size, any seasoned watch collector will tell you that not all numbers are created equal in the world of watch collecting, especially when it comes to case sizes. As such, it is officially the largest Rolex watch.
In the case of the Deepsea Sea-Dweller, it has a much thicker case than the Yacht-Master II, which was by design, as it was needed to contain the specially designed Ringlock System. This large central ring helps to support the extra-thick sapphire crystal and highly sturdy titanium case back. Because of all of this precise engineering, the Deepsea Sea-Dweller has a water resistance of 12,800 feet.
Rolex Sea-Dweller – 43mm
An updated version of a classic dive watch, the current version of the Rolex Sea-Dweller was originally released in 2017. Originally clocking in at a svelte 40 mm, the newest iteration adds 3 mm to the casing. This was done to both accommodate newer complications and to distinguish it from the Rolex Submariner.
Rolex Sky-Dweller – 42 mm
First seen at Bazelworld in 2012, the Sky-Dweller is the, mechanically speaking, the brand’s most complicated watch. It includes dual time zone displays and a number of calendar complications, so the watch is capable of simultaneously showing the local time, the time in another time zone, the month, and the date.
Rolex Submariner – 41 mm
For many collectors, the Rolex Submariner is considered the definitive dive watch, and with good reason – it’s been in production in some iteration since 1954 and has become one of the most recognized diving watches in the world.
This most recent version made history once again, as it is the first time that the Submariner has been made available at the 41 mm size.
