If you are not an avid golf fan, you may be unfamiliar with Jim Furyk, but longtime watchers of the sport will know that Furyk is one of the most decorated golfers in recent memory, including holding the record for the lowest score in PGA Tour history.

Unlike a lot of other professional athletes, Furyk tends to keep a low profile and is not known for being ostentatious, which is why many people may not know that he is also something of a watch connoisseur as well. With this in mind, let’s take a few moments to learn a little more about the storied career of Jim Furyk.

Who is Jim Furyk?

Jim Furyk was born on May 12th, 1970 in West Chester, Pennsylvania to Mike, who worked as a pro at various local golf clubs, including the West Chester Golf and Country Club, and Linda. He would spend his formative years in Pittsburgh, where his dad would teach him the fundamentals of the game.

Furyk would go on to graduate from Manheim Township High School in 1988, where he would play two sports for the school – basketball and golf, earning a state championship in the latter. Golf would take him to the University of Arizona, where he would be an All-American for the Wildcats team, and lead the team to an NCAA title in 1992, a feat which they have not repeated since.

Jim Furyk’s Early Golf Career

Furyk would formally turn pro in 1992 and win his first tour, the Nike Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic, the following year. In 1994, he would join the PGA, and during the years of 1998 through 2003, he would win at least one tournament each year. At this point in time, his winning streak was ranked second only to Tiger Woods’s, and he was ranked among the top ten golfers in the world.

Mainstream Success in the Golf World

In the early 2000’s, his biggest win to date came when he successfully tied the record for the lowest 72-hole score in U.S. Open history. As a result, he was able to win his first major championship, and secure himself a place in the conversation among golfing’s elite in a way he had not been able to previously.

In 2004, he played an abbreviated season due to suffering an injury and having to have surgery on his wrist. The following year saw him resume regular activity, however, and his form did not seem to be significantly impacted by his surgery. 2006 would see him finish second on the overall money list and also see him win the Vardon Trophy for the first time, which is awarded to the PGA’s leader in scoring average.

2010 and Beyond

The 2010 season ended up being one of Furyk’s most significant seasons yet, as he won a total of three championships and was awarded both the PGA Player of the Year and the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the first time.

Since 2012, Furyk has come close to winning titles several times, but he has not won a major title since that time. That does not mean, however, that his career has not had a number of exciting moments occur since that time.

In 2016, during the final round of the Travelers Championship, Furyk shot a round of 58, which remains the lowest score of any round of golf in PGA Tour history. As a result, he is often affectionately referred to by the nickname “Mr. 58” by many people within the golfing community.

2017 and 2018 were difficult years for Furyk, as a combination of age and injury would result in some of his worst performing seasons since he had turned pro back in the early 1990’s.  However, in 2019, Furyk would finish second place in the Players Championship, which proved to be a welcome result for the veteran golfer.

In August of 2020, Furyk formally debuted on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, as he had turned 50 that year. He would go on to win the Ally Challenge in his first start on the tour. In July of 2021, Furyk would win his first major seniors tournament, the U.S. Senior Open at the Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska. Furyk would win by defeating Mike Weir and Retief Goosen by three strokes.

What Kind of Watches are in Jim Furyk’s Watch Collection?

In addition to golfing, Jim Furyk is also noted to be an enthusiastic collector of luxury watches. In his collection, he is known to have a Rolex Datejust, a Rolex GMT-Master II, and a Breitling Astromat, among others. Furyk is known for his low-key personal style, so it stands to reason that his watches would err on the side of not being flashy – much like the man himself.
