Rubber B also creates custom rubber watch bands for watches produced by Panerai, Rolex, and Audemars Piguet.
Johnny Depp – Life and Style
With all the media buzz about Johnny Depp lately, the team at Rubber B thought it would be an ideal time to talk about a lighter side of Johnny’s life (before it hit the rough seas) and his unique sense of style, and the variety of watches he’s sported over the years.
Born June 9th, Johnny Depp is well known for his intellectual roles over the past decades. Most notably, however, was his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, the main anti-hero character from the Pirates of the Caribbean epic. Like his pirate character, Depp is often seen wearing beaded bracelets, bandanas, talismans, pendants, and amulets around his neck and wrists. He’s almost never been seen without his wide leather wristband with two buckles on his right wrist since he was young (he was photographed wearing it in 1989). He’s also seen in his early career wearing two watches on his left wrist and complementing those with bracelets and scarves.
One undeniable trait about Depp is his love for variety. He owns a Cartier Tank American Dual-time which he also wears bracelets, along with silver stylized human skull rings he’s often photographed wearing.
Depp has a wide collection of vintage timepieces and trinkets. Depp collects things like silver spoons, crystal decanters, turn-of-the-century bottles, rare books, silverware, old pistols, and paintings. He enjoys working on old motorcycles, his interests also stem from vintage clothes, and of course, watches.
He’s explained in previous interviews that his watch collection is very eclectic in many ways. Part of Depp’s collection are watches he’s picked up in flea markets around the world, he explained how each watch reminds him of a particular trip or event. Some of his more vintage watches are watches from the USSR, France, England, Italy, and America. Most date back to the 1950s and ’60s. Depp also owns a few early 20th-century pocket watches.
In Depp’s youth, he began his career with performances in hard-core clubs with his rock band. In his 56 years, his soul of Johnny is still the same as he was when he was a rebellious teenager forty years ago, and his style reflects that.
Johnny Depp Movies and Watch Collection
The first watch we’ll review from Depp’s collection is the one seen in his movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Although we know the movie takes place in the early 70s, it’s hard to tell for sure which wristwatch Depp is wearing in the film, you can see the case shape (looks similar to an Omega). The shape was used by many universal watch brands at the time, even ones that no longer exist today.
The next watch we’ll discuss is Cartier in Depp’s collection. He owns a classic round Ballon Bleu de Cartier with a multi-link bracelet, he wears it with natural turquoise and Buddhist rosary beads. The Cartier Ballon Bleu was first introduced as a lady’s wristwatch in 2007. This watch get’s a bad reputation because of the large words on the front dial (Cartier), this hasn’t stopped celebrities from sporting it though, such as Justin Bieber who also owns the same wristwatch.
Cartier Ballon Bleu 42mm Ref. w69016z4, made in full steel. This watch is worth around $3,500 – $5,000. It features a leather strap as well as a version with a bracelet.
When Johnny Depp appeared on the Esquire Magazine cover, he was wearing a Juvenia watch. The Juvenia watch is a sextant (instrument to measure distance) watch that first came out in the early 1940s. The watch was very popular at the time, it was famous for being the first company to make lady’s wristwatches. Around 1910, Junevia made its name in the horology industry by having made the smallest movements for wristwatches ever created. In the late 1980s/ early 1990s, Juvenia was bought by a foreign company and it’s rumored that the quality has decreased since then.
In the film Donnie Braso (1997) Depp plays the character Joe Bostoni. He can be seen wearing a Cartier Tank on his left wrist in the movie. The modern version of this watch comes with an easily removable and detachable watch strap that slips easily off the watch. The original watch was made by founder Louis Cartier in 1917, the Tank being the most iconic model.
In the film Blow (2001), Johnny Depp portrays George Jung, (nicknamed Boston George) an American drug trafficker and smuggler who was a major figure in the cocaine trade in the United States in the 1970s and early 1980s. Although Depp hasn’t been seen wearing a Rolex off-camera, he does for this film. In the movie, Depp is wearing an eye-catching presidential bracelet, it’s assumed to be a Rolex Day-Date with a black dial and Presidential bracelet.
The final and most fitting watch in Johnny Depp’s watch collection is the 45mm limited edition Corum Bubble Pirates watch, ref.08215020. Corum as a company is known for their unique watches, although not technically advanced, they make up for that with variety in design. Corum is a relatively young watch brand, only created in 1955. They’re a Swiss brand that’s highly popular in America. These limited-edition Pirates watch cost around $3,000-$5,000 retail price.
