If you are not a fan of soccer, in particular French soccer, it is unlikely that you will be familiar with the name Karim Benzema. However, Benzema is known for his extremely creative playmaking and prolific ability to score, and among those who know the game well, he is often stated to be one of the best forwards of his generation.
In addition to his soccer career, however, Benzema is also known to be something of a highly enthusiastic luxury timepiece collector. Being that his net worth is estimated at 70 million dollars, it should not be terribly surprising that he has a fairly impressive collection of watches as well.
But how did Karim Benzema come to acquire such an outstanding collection of watches? To answer that question, let’s take a closer look at the life, achievements, and watch collection of Karim Benzema.
Who is Karim Benzema?
Karim Benzema was born on December 19th, 1987 in Lyon, France. He began playing soccer as a small child and, after scoring two goals in a youth match against the Lyon academy team, he quickly attracted the attention of the Lyon team officials.
At the time, he was playing for Bron Terraillon SC, and that club’s manager, Serge Santa Cruz, did not allow the young man to immediately sign with the team. However, after speaking with Benzema’s father, they decided to allow Karim to join the Lyon team’s youth academy.
Karim Benzema’s Early Soccer Career
Benzema was a good student, described as “discreet and respectful” by those who knew him during this time in interviews. He would serve as a ballboy during matches for the senior team as well. He would quickly ascend through the ranks of youth soccer, including scoring 38 goals during his time with the under 16 league in France.
Mainstream Success in Soccer
Benzema would formally make his professional debut on January 15th, 2005, after being called up to the senior team by manager Paul Le Guen. His team won the match 2-0, with Benzema providing an assist for the second goal scored during that game. He would subsequently sign his first professional contract soon afterward.
After playing several games as a substitute player, he would make his first formal start in April of that same year, appearing in a 1-0 victory over the Lens team. Despite having an impressive start, the 2005-2006 season would prove to be a challenging one for Benzema.
The reason for this is that the team was now under the management of Gerard Houllier, who gave Benzema less playing time in order to accommodate Brazilian striker Fred, who had just recently signed to the team. Benzema would eventually go on to be one of the most decorated players in that team’s history, though he would end up leaving the team in 2009.
Signing with Real Madrid
On July 1st, 2009, it was made public that Benzema would end up transferring to Real Madrid, one of the most high-profile soccer teams in the sport today. As a result of joining the team, he was signed to a salary of 35 million euros, with the potential to earn up to 41 million based on how well he performed.
During his first match with the team, on July 20th against a Dublin team, he would appear as a substitute and go on to score the only goal in the entire game, winning the match for his team.
In 2011, Benzema would go on to win his first La Liga championship after attending a high-performance clinic in order to help him lose weight. He would return from the clinic 18 pounds lighter, a fact which would significantly improve his performance as a striker.
In more recent years, Benzema would be promoted to vice-captain of the team, which many felt was well-deserved due to the length of the time he had served with the team and the fact that he had consistently been a high-quality striker for them. As of this time, he is currently the team’s third highest goal scorer of all time, overtaking the record previously held by Di Stefano. He will likely continue to play for Real Madrid for the next several years, and it certainly won’t come as a surprise to soccer fans if he helps them win another title in the process.
