Over the last several decades, Matt Damon has become one of cinema’s most respected and versatile players, as he is well-known for being the kind of actor who manages to elevate the projects he is cast in by mere virtue of his presence. He is also noted for his charitable projects off-screen, many of which focus on bringing clean drinking water to impoverished nations around the world.
In addition to being an actor, writer, and producer, a keen observer might also have noted that Damon has become something of a watch collector over the years. With 2023 seeing the release of Oppenheimer, his most high-profile project in several years, Rubber B thought it would be an ideal moment to examine the early life, career, and watch collection of this beloved actor.
Who Is Matt Damon?
Matt Damon was born on October 8th, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Kent, a stockbroker, and Nancy, a professor who specialized in early childhood education. He has a brother, Kyle, who is a sculptor and artist. When he was a student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, he began performing in their theater productions.
During his childhood, he met his lifelong friend and creative collaborator, Ben Affleck. The two would grow up a few blocks away from each other and are still friends today, into their early 50’s. Affleck has said of Damon and the friendship “There were a few critical times, which are private and I don’t want to share, but where your support was so profoundly meaningful to me that I don’t think I would’ve been able to be successful without it.”
Matt Damon’s Early Acting Career
Damon’s first film role was a one-line part in 1988’s Mystic Pizza. The film is notable for having several actors in it who would later go on to stardom, including Julia Roberts and Vincent D’Onofrio.
By 1992, Damon would be getting lead roles in films such as School Ties and Geronimo: An American Legend. While Damon would continue to act over the next several years in various films, he would not formally break out until 1997.
Good Will Hunting and Mainstream Success
In 1997, Damon and Affleck would co-star in Good Will Hunting, in which Damon would play the titular character and Affleck his best friend, Chucky. The film was successful both critically and commercially, and both men would receive Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, as they also wrote the film as well.
Damon’s profile increased considerably after that time, and he has been in many highly successful films in the ensuing 25 years since the release of that film. Some of his many highlights include Dogma, Saving Private Ryan, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Ocean’s series of films, as well as the Bourne series of films, among many others.
Damon’s ability to move between action-driven studio projects and smaller independent fare ensures that we will be seeing more of his work for many years to come.
Upcoming Projects
Damon has been keeping busy and will appear in three films slated to be released in 2024: Drive-Away Dolls, IF, and The Instigators. Damon will also appear in Unstoppable, whose release date is TBD at this time.
