There are only a few athletes that can claim to be universally known, who can truly say that they changed the face of their sport forever. Michael Phelps is certainly one of those athletes. He is to swimming as Michael Jordan is to basketball and Wayne Gretzky is to hockey, and the records he set during his Olympic career will likely remain unbeaten for decades.
While many people know that Phelps is a world-class swimmer, what is less common knowledge is that he is also something of a watch connoisseur. We will now more closely examine, the life, career, and watch collection of Michael Phelps.
Who is Michael Phelps?
Michael Fred Phelps II was born on June 30th, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland. Phelps is the youngest of three children, as he has two older sisters. His mother, Debbie, is a middle school principal. His father is a former Maryland State Trooper who played football in high school and tried out for the Washington Commanders in the 1970s
Phelps’s parents divorced when he was nine, and his father later remarried in 2000. These events significantly strained his relationship with his father, and it would take a significant amount of time to repair.
Michael Phelps’s Early Swimming Career
Phelps began swimming at the age of seven. He and his sisters all took a passionate interest in the sport, and he soon found that it was an excellent outlet for his energy. By the time he was ten years old, Phelps held a national record in the 100-meter butterfly. He would begin training at the age of 11 at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under decorated coach Bob Bowman.
Phelps has mentioned that Bowman was a tough and sometimes austere coach, comparing him to a drill sergeant due to his serious nature and regimented training style. However, Phelps has stated that he was thankful for the opportunity and is on record stating that “Training with Bob is the smartest thing I’ve ever done … I’m not going to swim for anyone else.”
Mainstream Success as an Athlete
Phelps would make his first appearance at the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, where he became the youngest man to make a U.S. Olympic swim team in 68 years. While he did not win any medals, he would appear in the finals and finished fifth in the 200-meter butterfly.
He would officially win his first gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. During that time, he would win six overall gold medals. This would properly begin a career that would go on to see him become the most decorated male swimmer in Olympic history.
Before retiring in 2016, Phelps would go on to win 23 gold medals, three silver medals, and two bronze medals. His legacy and impact on the sport remain undoubtedly, and he has inspired a new legion of young men to take up the sport.
Current Projects
Phelps was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and struggled with depression as an adult. He is currently partnered with Talkspace, an online therapy service, and has become a spokesperson for those struggling with their mental health.
What Watches are in Michael Phelps’s Watch Collection?
Since qualifying for the 2000 Summer Olympics at the age of 15, he has set more records than any other swimmer. It’s no surprise that he’s become a brand ambassador for Omega, the official timekeeper of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Swiss luxury watch company is well-known for its support of water sports, offering a variety of technical items such as touchpads, underwater lap counters, and other timekeeping equipment used to measure athletic performance. Phelps is an ideal fit for Omega as a brand ambassador. He has worn numerous Omega watches over the years and is frequently seen wearing an Omega Seamaster.
The Planet Ocean Seamaster “Michael Phelps” Limited Edition
The one-of-a-kind timepiece has a helium escape valve and comes with a blue rubber strap with a blue and orange lining and orange contrast stitching. The domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides. The Seamaster Planet Ocean “Michael Phelps” edition is limited to 280 pieces in order to honor Phelps’ lifetime medal count. We’d have to agree with Omega when he calls him “the greatest athlete in the history of aquatic sport.” Phelps has been an Omega “friend” since 2004, is a long-time Seamaster wearer, and has been the honoree at several Omega events. Although not quite a brand ambassador, the association is unquestionably beneficial to Omega. So, unlike some limited edition tribute watches, this is one that the honoree will undoubtedly wear and use. Phelps fans and serious aquatic athletes in their own right will want to reserve one.
