NBA Youngboy has become one of the more recognizable rappers to emerge from the Southern underground rap scene in recent years. Like many rappers who have begun to achieve prominence in the industry, he began his career by putting out his music online, where he began to develop a cult following.
Youngboy’s moniker has nothing to do with basketball – rather, it is an acronym for “Never Be Broke Again.” He seems to have accomplished this goal, as he has an impressive collection of luxury watches. Below, we will learn more about the early life, musical career, and watch collection of the prolific young rapper.
Where is NBA Youngboy from?
NBA Youngboy was born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden on October 20, 1999, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father was sentenced to 55 years in prison, which would result in him being raised by his maternal grandmother, Alice. When his grandmother died, he was sent to live in a group home. Youngboy would end up dropping out of high school in the ninth grade.
After being sent to juvenile detention on a robbery charge, Youngboy would begin writing the lyrics for what became his debut mixtape. This would be the first of many legal struggles that he would deal with throughout his career.
NBA Youngboy’s Early Music Career
Youngboy began producing music with a microphone that he had purchased from Wal-Mart. In 2015, he would release his debut mixtape, Life After Fame. He would release several other mixtapes in 2016, and by 2017, he was having rappers such as Meek Mill and Young Thug make guest appearances on his singles.
In late 2017, Youngboy would release his eighth mixtape, Ain’t Too Long. It would mark his second appearance on the Billboard 200 chart.
Until Death Call My Name and Mainstream Success
In 2018, Youngboy would release his debut studio album, Until Death Call My Name. It would be supported by three singles: “Outside Today,” “Diamond Teeth Samurai,” and “Villain.”
He has subsequently released five more studio albums, including Top, Sincerely, Kentrell, The Last Slimeto, I Rest My Case, and Don’t Try This at Home. The last two records were released in 2023. Critics and fans alike have praised Youngboy for his prolific output, as he has released numerous mixtapes in between each of these albums.
