As the leading producer of custom rubber watch straps, Rubber B consistently strives to innovate and improve on our existing product catalog, which features custom rubber watch straps for watches from leading watchmakers around the globe, such as Rolex, Tudor, Panerai, and Audemars Piguet. In honor of a major anniversary for one of these brands, Panerai, we are going to spend some time looking at the PAM 634, which is a special kind of Panerai Luminor watch.
We will begin by taking a brief look at the history of the company as a whole, then explain what makes the PAM 634 so unique, even among Panerai watches, explore the timepiece from a technical standpoint, and then conclude by discussing the watch from a technical standpoint.
A Brief History of Panerai
Initially founded as Guido Panerai and Figlio (which translates to Guido Panerai and Sons in English) in 1860, the Panerai company came to prominence as the producers of high-quality instruments for the Italian Navy. In addition to manufacturing watches, they also produced illuminated gun sights and other precision equipment meant for highly technical purposes.
Over time, they would come to prominence as the official watch manufacturer for the Royal Italian Navy, as their dive watches were extremely well-crafted and could survive in not ideal conditions. Their reputation for building precise, highly durable timepieces would soon earn them a legion of fans across the globe, and today, Panerai is considered to be one of the most respected watchmaking firms in the world.
Why is the PAM 634 Watch So Special?
The PAM 634 Luminor Paneristi is a highly specialized version of the Luminor timepiece, which is arguably Panerai’s most famous watch, and is comparable to Rolex’s Submariner in terms of significant dive watches. The Luminor consistently remains one of Panerai’s best-selling watches, so it only stands to reason that they would want to celebrate a company milestone by crafting a special version of this particular watch.
The PAM 634 was created in honor of the 15th anniversary of the Paneristi website. The website is a dedicated forum for those who love the company, and its watches, to share their opinions and celebrate these finely crafted luxury timepieces. The name is highly fitting, as “Paneristi” is the informal nickname for aficionados of the company.
The PAM 634 was limited to a production cycle of only 500 pieces, meaning that it is not easy to come by one. Its availability is further limited by the fact that this watch is only available through official Panerai boutiques, and to members of the website. Considering that this timepiece was intended as a “thank you” from the company to its longtime fans, it stands to reason that they would want to restrict access to these watches.
What Are The Technical Specifications of the PAM 634?
The PAM 634 comes in a 44 mm stainless steel case, making it slightly larger than the average luxury watch. It measures 53 mm from tip to tip, and has a thickness of 13 mm. The lug-to-lug measurement is 24 mm.
The movement is a manual wind OP Caliber 1, which has a 56-hour power reserve. The sapphire is a crystal, and the watch comes with a black leather Panerai strap and a stainless steel buckle.
The PAM 634 also comes with a special, and rather elegant, gift box that contains both the watch and the papers documenting that it is an official Panerai timepiece. Because many of these watches are now available on the gray market, meaning they are being resold, it is entirely possible to purchase the watch without receiving the original box and papers to go along with.
If a seller does have the original box and documentation to go along with the watch, do expect to pay more for the piece than you would if you were solely buying the watch on its own.
How Does the PAM 634 Fair in Terms of Its Aesthetic?
A cursory glance at this watch is deceptive, as it does not immediately seem as if it looks radically different from the previous Panerai Luminor models. However, if one were to spend a couple of minutes looking at the watch, it becomes clear rather quickly that there are a number of special design elements Panerai has incorporated into this watch.
Upon examining the crown guard, you would be able to see that Panerai has carefully engraved the word “Paneristi” onto the guard, which is not seen on other Luminor watches. “Paneristi.com 15th Anniversary” has also been engraved onto the back of the watch case as well.
How Can You Find a PAM 634, and How Much Will It Cost?
As previously mentioned, these watches can be somewhat difficult to procure due to their highly limited production cycle. However, you may be able to find them online through a reliable reseller, or your jeweler if you have a strong relationship with one in your area.
Be certain that if you are purchasing one of these watches online that it is a genuine PAM 634 model. Thankfully, these watches are somewhat more difficult to counterfeit due to the complex engraving on the case back and crown guard of the watch.
These watches tend to retail for anywhere from $6,000 to $7,500 on the gray market.
