The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante PAM00286 is an amazing limited edition Panerai timepiece. The reference PAM00286 (aka PAM 286) was launched in 2007 and had a limited run of only 500 pieces. It is a complex timepiece with extensive features that blow most chronographs out of the water – including the Rolex Daytona.
It is part of the long tradition of solidly built timepieces that Panerai has been known for. This timepiece is both packed with features not found on most timepieces, but it still has the simple look and military industrial strength that makes a Panerai special. No matter if you are taking this timepiece to the boardroom or to the diving board, this is a timepiece that will keep up with you.
Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante PAM00286
Panerai created the 44 mm case for the Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante PAM00286 with the same look and feel as many other Luminors. If feels light and has great balance when wearing it on your wrist. The 44 mm case is a good mid size case, but because of the patented locking mechanism the Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante PAM00286 feels bigger and more substantial.
The PAM00286 is powered by the Automatic mechanical, exclusive Panerai OP XVIII calibre. It is built with 31 jewels and has a Glucydur® balance, and an Incabloc® anti-shock device. The double column wheel provides a power reserve of 42 hours.
If you flip the PAM00286 over you can see the skeletal display case back and the beauty of the OP XVIII calibre. It is decorated with Côtes de Genève markings for bridges and oscillating weight. It is also certified by the independent Swiss agency awarding it the prestigious Chronometer Certificate (C.O.S.C) for precision and accuracy.
The PAM00286 has a deployant buckle on its black rubber strap. It also comes with a black Carbon Fiber strap with a back of leather which is soft against the skin.
The Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante PAM00286 comes with a very strong steel case. The locking mechanism protects the winding crown from both accidental damage and water damage. This timepiece supports a waterproof depth of 300 feet.
The scratchproof sapphire crystal protects the face and back face of the timepiece. The polished bezel gives the timepiece a chrome-like appeal. The dial is black with Paris Hobnails decoration.
It has highly luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers. It has a minute counter at 3 o’clock, a seconds dial at 9 o’clock, a blue central chronograph hand and a split seconds hand underneath it.
Around the flange of the dial is a tachymeter scale which goes from 60 to 400 KPH/MPH. The really unique thing about this timepiece is the Rattrapante features.
Although many timepieces imitate the Rolex Daytona chronograph, this timepiece has one unique feature that is supremely better than what Rolex has. The 2nd hand under the blue hand has the ability to create a stop seconds notation. So, when you press the left pusher at the 8 o’clock position you will see the steel hand remain at the exact point where the hand was when you pressed it. The blue hand will continue to tick.
This split-seconds feature is what is known as the Rattrapante feature. It requires incredible design precision to make a timepiece so extraordinary. What is so unique is to be able to get a Panerai timepiece with a Rattrapante feature for around $12,500 in after markets. Considering you would have to pay more to get a less featured Rolex Daytona, the Panerai is an incredible deal.
Many Rattrapante timepieces are extremely valuable and pricey. The Patek Philippe Ref. 5372P Grand Complication are in high demand even at $60,000. The F.P. Journe Chronograph Monopoussoir Rattrapante had one Rattrapante that went for auction at 1.25 million in 2018, but it has newer units that are selling for over $60,000. The A. Lange & Söhne triple split ratches up the rattrapante to 3 hands, but the price is an outstanding $147,000.
The Panerai timepiece is clearly one of the greatest opportunities to own a piece of horological history. It is not only a feature rich masterpiece, but it is something that is uniquely wearable. You can feel at ease taking this timepiece swimming, doing athletics or even wearing it with a suit.
Rubber B has developed a tremendous amount of bands for the Panerai Luminor lineup. One of the great things about Panerai timepieces is that you can dress up the watch with a band or dress it down with another color band. The black dial and stainless steel case can match well with many color bands. Visit our Panerai watchband page for the 44mm 1950 timepieces here.
Rubber B offers 6 color bands that have the “Blocked Engineering” features built in. It also has the 100% Rubber – band that looks like real Alligator Leather in both Black and Brown. It also has the 2-tone Vulchromatic series which features two colors. And it has the Ballistic series which is a pattern that looks like real canvas but is actually pure rubber. All bands are made in Switzerland with the highest standards possible.
