As a presenter at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2017, Panerai is among the watchmakers introducing their new 2017 models this week. A formidable new model just introduced by Panerai, the LAB-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3-Days (PAM00700) features the largest concentration of innovations the watchmaker has ever offered on one timepiece. Operating without liquid lubrication, the watchmaker guarantees this watch for 50 years thanks to the materials used to power it.
The large 49 mm case is made of Carbotech, created by compressing sheets of carbon fiber together with a special polymer. The result is a lightweight case that is hypo-allergenic and resistant to corrosion with a dark and textured finish. The dial is made from Carbon Nanotubes that are meant to absorb light, creating a perfect environment for the luminescent markers to shine brightly in contrast. This highly legible display features Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 6 o’clock with baton hour markers and a seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock.
The clear case back shows the power reserve and many of the technical innovations that set this timepiece apart from other Panerai models. Powered by a P.3001/C manually-wound mechanical movement manufactured by Oficine Panerai, it features 4 jewels and components that reduce the friction between parts. The escapement is made of silicon with a special Diamond-Like Carbon coating on the wheel. The shock protection system is made from a composite material that integrates Tantalum-based ceramic.
Aside from its futuristic aesthetic with black carbon and blue luminescence, the PAM00700 offers a combination of mechanical watchmaking innovations that guarantees years and years of operating without the need to lubricate its parts. This is the true innovation of this wristwatch model, allowing owners to enjoy it without worrying about servicing and maintenance.
