Rob Lowe wearing a Panerai is not an uncommon site for the A-list movie and TV star. Lowe shot to fame as an actor in the early 1980’s and became a teen idol. He was often cast with several other actors which were nicknamed the “Brat Pack”.
Other Brat Pack members include other A-Listers such as Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Robert Downey Jr., Ally Sheedy and Molly Ringwald. There are other actors that are often linked to the “Brat Pack” but Lowe is definitely a mainstay of the group even if he doesn’t appear in some “Brat” movies.
Although Lowe appeared in a TV role in the late 70’s, he rose to superstardom with his 1980’s string of hit movies with other “Brat Pack” members including The Outsiders (1983), Class (1983), The Hotel New Hampshire (1984), Oxford Blues (1984), St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), About Last Night… (1986), and Square Dance (1987).
Lowe achieved some notoriety in 1988 with the first sex tape scandal of note which negatively affected his career, but incidentally started a trend that became a starlet’s tool to achieve greater mainstream recognition.
Rob Lowe had a quiet 1990’s, only making The Stand (1994) – a movie based on Stephen King’s book. However, he resurfaced a half-decade later appearing in the political TV show The West Wing (1999-2003), and seemingly hasn’t stopped working ever since with other TV hits like Brothers & Sisters (2006-2010), Parks and Recreation (2010-2015), Code Black (2016-2018 and 9-1-1: Lone Star (2020-Present).
Lowe is widely known for his acting skill and his good looks but is also an accomplished director and producer. He has appeared in the acclaimed Stephen King mini-series Salem’s Lot. However he turned down the role of Dr. Shepherd of Grey’s Anatomy which shot Patrick Dempsey to stardom due to that show’s eventual long-running success.
Lowe probably owes much of his more recent 2+ decades of success to his long marriage to wife Sheryl Berkoff and his many years of sobriety. He stripped away the partying lifestyle that gave him a poor image in the tabloids in the 1980’s. His 180 degree shift has benefitted him with great opportunities and premier roles that have redefined his level of success which few “Brat Pack” members can match. The only exception is fellow “Pack” member Robert Downey Jr. who shot through the stratosphere with Iron Man.
Rob Lowe wearing a Panerai Luminor 1950
Rob Lowe has joined many other A-List actors who have found an absolute love for the Italian watchmaker Panerai. The large 47mm case feels even larger with the protective clasp which covers and locks down on top of the crown. This Panerai Luminor 1950 appears to be one of the models possibly worn by Lowe. It has the stainless steel case and black dial which is not cluttered by too many functions. It has a Sapphire crystal and a waterproofness to at least 300 feet.
This particular model is a hand-wound model. However it comes with 8 days of power reserve – or 192 hours. It would be interesting if Lowe prefers this hand-wound model to an automatic since it requires more upkeep and diligence, but harkens back to a historical time when all watches were wound. Perhaps that reminds Lowe of his past and helps keep himself grounded in the present.
Rob Lowe has chosen to wear a leather strap rather than a steel strap. He would probably like to replace his Panerai leather strap with a Rubber B manufactured Rubber strap that looks like actual leather. Rubber B has realized the new process of making strong vulcanized rubber straps with the same look and feel of real leather or real fabric. This new process is both Vegan friendly and much more solid since it supports the timepiece better at the beach or during physical activity.
