Within the last decade or so, there has been an increased popularity of vintage watches. They occupy a unique space within watch collecting – they are generally affordable for most beginning collectors to purchase one as their first watch. However, because they are not being produced anymore, they manage to have a unique identity of their own as well.
For that same reason, some of these watches can also end up being highly coveted, which causes their price point to rise once again. It is an area of watch collecting where collectors of different backgrounds can interact with one another. Taking into account all of these factors at the same time, it is not difficult to understand why vintage watches have become sought after by collectors of varying backgrounds.
Therefore, Rubber B thought it would be appropriate to have the latest entry in our long-running “Vs.” series focuses on two beloved vintage watches, both by Rolex. In this instance, we will be examining the Rolex 1601 Datejust and the Rolex 16014 Datejust. The Datejust remains one of Rolex’s most dependable models and continues to be a reliable seller for the company year after year.
Below, we will examine both the technical specifications and the design aspects of both of these watches in greater detail.
A Brief Note About Model Numbers
It is important to note that the model numbers for both of these watches span a significant period of time. The 1601 number refers to Rolex Datejust watches that were produced from the late 1950’s until the early 1970’s. The 16014 number refers to any model that was produced from the late 1970’s through the 1980’s.
What Are The Technical Specifications of the Rolex 1601 Datejust?
The Rolex Datejust 1601 has a case size of 36 mm, which would seem small by today’s standards. However, at that time, the average person’s wrist was much smaller, so 36 mm was considered the industry standard at that point in time.
This watch is powered by the caliber 1570/5. This movement is automatic and self-winding and has a power reserve of 48 hours. This is another instance where a measurement would appear small by today’s standards but was more common at the time of the watch’s production.
How Does The Rolex 1601 Datejust Fare Aesthetically?
As one might expect, the Rolex Datejust has a simple, elegant face, which is very much in keeping with vintage Rolex watches. It is also worth noting that the dial on this watch is informally said to be in the “pie pan” style. This refers to the edges of the dial dropping off ever so slightly, giving them a similar appearance to a baking pan.
What Are The Technical Specifications of the Rolex 16014 Datejust?
Occasionally, a watch will be discontinued and then followed up with a new watch that deviates very little from the previous design. However, this is not the case with Datejust 16014. The only thing this watch has in common with its predecessor is that they both have a case size of 36 mm.
The Rolex Datejust 16014 is powered by the Caliber 3035, which is automatic, perpetual, and self-winding. It has a water resistance of up to 330 feet.
How Does The Rolex 16014 Datejust Rate in Terms of Its Design?
There are two major differences between Datejust 1601 and 16014 in design and overall look. The first is that the bezel on this watch is fluted, while it is not on the previous iteration. It also has a flat dial, unlike the pie pan dial that the 1601 watch had. These visual markers make it easier to distinguish between the two watches without having to look at their model numbers.
