Rolex Sea-Dweller History

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller is a line of diver’s watch produced by Rolex.

The Sea Dweller has an underwater diving depth of 610 meters, which equates to a surprising 2,000 feet.  Keep in mind that this impressive rating is only for the vintage models. The most recent model (Sea-Dweller Deepsea) has a water resistance of up to 3,900 meters or 12,800 feet!

1960s- 1967s

The Rolex Sea-Dweller was developed for divers in the 1960s.

Professional divers needed a water resistant watch so they could use its various functionalities for their profession. In 1967, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller Submariner 2000 became available and was developed from the Submariner for the Comex SA industrial deep-sea diving company. The watch had an increased crystal thickness and it came in variations. The watch had a depth rating of 2,000 feet with reference number 1665.

1960s- 1967s

A valuable integrated function of Sea-Dwellers is the helium escape valve for saturation diving.

Saturation diving is a technique that allows divers to reduce the risk of decompression sickness when they stay underwater for a longer period of time. Decompression sickness occurs when the inert gases dissolved in the body tissues decompress to a point that bubbles form. This may block blood vessels or damage nearby cells. This is very dangerous and it is imperative to avoid it. The helium escape valve is valuable because it can release helium to alleviate a pressure difference that can result from the trapped gases inside the water case and the environment. Specifically, the aforementioned gas is helium, the smallest natural gas particle. The earliest Sea-Dwellers did not have this valuable feature.

1992

After the production of the Sea-Dweller Submariner 2000 models, Rolex released the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller 4000 (4000 stands for 4000 feet of water resistance or 1,220 meters). This model was issued to Comex divers since 1992. There were also some semi custom production runs of Sea-Dweller Submariner 2000 and 400 models for Comex employees or for business relations. Some of these variants actually had the Comex logo depicted on the dial. Unofficially, they came to be known as the COMEX watches.

1992

2008

In 2008, Rolex introduced the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA (reference #116660). The watch has a water resistance of up to 3,900 meters or 12,800 feet – very impressive! In its launch year, this model was the most water resistance deep sea diving watch. The watch is unusually large because watch cases designed for extreme depths must be dimensionally large enough to deal with the additional water pressure.

2008

The Sea-Dweller holds some impressive records. For instance, in 1988 a team of professional divers of the Comex SA industrial deep-sea diving company set the diving depth record for actual off shore diving when they performed pipe line connection exercises at 1,752 feet below sea level. Separately, in 1992 Theo Mavrostomos achieved a record by diving 2,300 feet in an onshore hyperbaric chamber. After this achievement, Rolex used it as part of their advertising and marketing strategies.

Diving under the water for a prolonged period of time carries very high risks such as high pressure nervous syndrome and a host of medical problems. As a result, manned vessels are being created to dive deeper into the ocean not only for exploration, but for work as well. For example, offshore oilfield drilling requires diving very deeply into the ocean. These practical demands have given rise to the Rolex Sea-Dweller, a watch that is able to withstand the most extreme pressure circumstances.
