Rolex Yacht-Master II 2016 vs 2017 Differences

Rubber B was the first company worldwide to develop custom rubber watch straps exclusively for Rolex timepieces, and since then, the company has added several other prominent watchmakers to its product portfolio. Rubber B also creates custom rubber watch bands for watches produced by Panerai, Rolex, and Audemars Piguet. In today’s blog post, we’ll review the similarities and differences between the Rolex Yachtmaster II and the redesign of the watch, Yachtmaster 2 116680.

Rolex Yacht-Master II 2016 vs 2017 Yacht-Master 2 Re-Design 116680

The original Rolex Yachtmaster was first released in 2007. In 2010 Rolex released versions available in white gold and yellow gold, and in 2011, a Rolesor combination of gold and steel including the Everose gold and steel two-tone version of this wristwatch. In 2013, the all-steel version was released. Finally, the redesigned version of the Rolex YachtMaster 2 was released in 2017 at Baselworld. Both the Rolex Yacht-Master II and the YachtMaster 2 redesign have the same reference number of 116680. In this article, we will compare the Yacht-Master II 2016 vs 2017 (Yacht-Master II 2013 to 2016 to Yacht-Master II 2017 to the current Year)

Price

The Rolex Yacht-Master II 2013 version of this watch is not available at authorized Rolex retailers but is available on the market for purchase at around $14,800. The 2017 version of Rolex YachtMaster 2 is available at Rolex authorized retailers for around $18,750.

Although these watches are only three years apart by release date, Rolex decided to make these changes on the 2017 version YachtMaster 2, along with other Yacht-Masters (white gold, yellow gold, two-tone, and steel versions). The reason for the update of these timepieces is due to the celebration of the 10-year anniversary release of the original Yacht-Master (the original Yacht-Master was released in 2007, and the newest redesign in 2017).

Yacht-Master II 2016 vs 2017 Changes

One of the most noticeable changes to the Yacht-Master is the design of the hands. Instead of the blue sword steel hands with skeletonized tips of the 2013 version Yacht-Master II, the Rolex YachtMaster 2 redesign features a sportier look that is comparable with the Rolex GMT, Submariners, and Deep Seas. The Rolex YachtMaster 2 includes a circular, Mercedes hand and a circular hour hand, and a skeletonized minute hand. The skeletonization of the minute hand on the newer Rolex YachtMaster 2 is also more hollowed out than that of the 2013 Rolex Yacht-Master II in order to better see the text in the middle of the dial and the programmable countdown.

Another change to the dial is the updated markers at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions. On the Rolex YachtMaster 2 2017 version of this timepiece, the 12 o’clock hour maker now has a triangle to indicate it and the 6 o’clock has a larger and more prominent rectangle. The 2013 version of the Yacht-Master II has consistent marker sizes throughout the dial.  Although these changes may seem minor at first glance, it helps with the readability of the dial and landmarks of the hours overall.

The Chromalight display of the hour hand is also changed from the 2013 version Yacht-Master II. The 2013 version Yacht-Master II only had Chromalight on the tip of the hour hand and didn’t feature as much lume. The 2017 version of Rolex YachtMaster 2 includes the Mercedes hand that has more readability because the tip of the hand and the hand itself is all luminous making it easier to read at night. The older 2013 Rolex Yacht-Master II has bluish-toned 18-carat gold hour markers to match with the blue sword steel hands. The newer Rolex YachtMaster 2 has a simpler, white gold finish on the hour markers to match with Mercedes’s hand on the newer version of this timepiece.
