If you are not a regular watcher of tennis, the name Stan Wawrinka is likely unfamiliar to you. However, for those who do regularly keep up with the sport, Wawrinka has been a well-known and competitive presence for the better part of a decade, though his pro career began much earlier than that.
Stan Wawrinka has also been noted as being a keen collector of luxury watches, so with that in mind, we will take a closer look at his life, career, achievements, and watch collection of Stan Wawrinka.
Who is Stan Wawrinka?
Stan Wawrinka was born as Stanislas Wawrinka on March 28th, 1985 in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2014, before the French Open, he asked to change his name to Stan Wawrinka for all promotional purposes and press conferences. He started playing tennis at the age of eight, during which time he only practiced once a week.
At the age of eleven, he would increase his practice regiment to three times a week, and by 15, he would stop attending school entirely so that he could focus his attention on tennis full-time. However, he would complete his formal education with the assistance of the French organization CNED, which helped with regard to his scheduling and availability to attend classes.
Wawrinka was coached by Dimitri Zavialoff from the age of eight until 2010 and is currently coached by Daniel Vallverdu.
Stan Wawrinka’s Early Tennis Career
Stan Wawrinka began playing international junior events in 1999, at the age of 14. He would then go on to enter the satellite circuit the following year, and by 2002, he had formally begun his professional career. In 2003, he would end the year ranked at number 169, as well as go on to win the French Junior Open.
Mainstream Success in Tennis
On July 11, 2004, Wawrinka would appear in his first ever career final, doubles match with Marc Rosset as his partner – the two would go on to lose the match. 2004 would also see Wawrinka make his debut with the Swiss national team for the Davis Cup.
By the end of 2005, his international standing had gone up significantly, and he was in the top 50 ranking of tennis players in the world. He would end the year being ranked number 29 in the world.
By 2008, Wawrinka would be ranked in the top 10 for the first time in his career, as well as make his first finals appearance in a Masters series, ultimately losing the final to Novak Djokovic, with whom he has had something of a rivalry over the last several years.
In 2014, Wawrinka would achieve several career firsts, including winning his first Grand Slam title and his first Davis Cup, and he managed to do so in the same season. By accomplishing this, he became the first player to accomplish this feat since tennis legend Andre Agassi had done so some thirty-two years prior, in 1992.
2016 would prove to be another banner year for the vaunted tennis player, as he would go on to win his first U.S. Open, with this being the only time he has won the tournament.
In more recent years, however, Stan Wawrinka has had to work through a number of career setbacks. 2020 would see his season derailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then in 2021, he was forced to take a hiatus due to an injury. As of 2022, he is playing tennis again, and will likely continue to do so for years to come.
What Kinds of Watches are in Stan Wawrinka’s Watch Collection?
Like many other celebrities, Stan Wawrinka is a noted fan of the Royal Oak Offshore watch, which is a popular choice among many professional athletes, musicians, actors, and other celebrities. He likely owns several other timepieces as well, but he is frequently spotted wearing this during his tennis matches.
