If you are not an ardent watcher of tennis, you are not likely to be familiar with the name Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, in 2019, the young Greek tennis player made history when, at only 20 years of age, he became the world’s youngest Rolex Ambassador in the history of the company.
Rolex is known for picking their ambassadors, or testimonies, as they now seem to be more frequently calling them, with the utmost of care, so why was someone so young given such a high honor? In order to answer that question, we will learn more about life, athletic career, and watch collection of Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Who is Stefanos Tsitsipas?
Stefanos Tsitsipas was born on August 12th, 1998 in Athens, Greece to Apostolos Tsitsipas and Julia Apostoli, a Russian-born professional tennis player who had had some success in her own career during the 1980’s. His father was also a professional tennis player, and so it was not a surprise, when, at the age of nine, Stefanos declared to his father “Dad, I have to tell you something: I want to become a tennis player, I like the competition, I like the challenge.” He has three younger siblings, all of whom are also professional tennis players.
He began taking formal tennis lessons at the age of six at the Tennis Club Glyfada, and his father has always served as his primary coach.
Stefanos Tsitsipas’s Early Tennis Career
Stefanos Tsitsipas is a former world-ranked number one junior who began playing on the ITF Junior Circuit in 2013, when he was just 14 years old. He did not play in any high-level tournaments until the following year, but he was able to make it all the way to the final of his second Grade A event at the Orange Bowl only a month later.
2016, however, would prove to be the year that Tsitsipas would truly break out, as he would reach the quarterfinals of all eight tournaments that he played, including all four Grand Slams. After winning his first Grade A title, he would go on to become the top-ranked junior in the world.
Professional Beginnings and Mainstream Success
Tsitsipas would play in his first ATP main event during the 2017 Rotterdam Open, where he would go on to lose his debut match to the eventual champion, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He would also make his Grand Slam debut later that year as a qualifier at the French Open, but go on to lose to Ivo Karlović during their first match. After losing in qualifying at the US Open, Tsitsipas won his first Challenger title in Genova. Overall, he qualified for a tour-best eight events during the season, including Wimbledon and the Shanghai Masters.
However, he would not win a tour-level match until near the season’s end, when he successfully bested fellow Next Gen player Karen Khachanov in Shanghai, China. At the European Open in Belgium, Tsitsipas reached his first ATP semifinal as a qualifier.
As a result, Tsitsipas became the first Greek player to be ranked in the top 100 of the ATP rankings, accomplishing the feat at the age of 19. Tsitsipas closed out the season with another Challenger final, this time in Brest.
2018 would prove to be another significant year for Stefanos Tsitsipas as well, with victories over Fabio Fognini and Ernests Gulbis, making him the first Greek player to win an ATP title. As a result, by the end of the year, he would receive an award for “Most Improved Player.”
Most recently, Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the semifinals for the third time at the 2022 Australian Open, which saw him once again play Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of the previous year’s semifinals match. However, his father was given a coaching violation notice because he was coaching Stefanos in Greek. He would go on to lose in four sets.
At the 2022 Abierto Mexicano Telcel, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Laslo Dere in the first round, making him the first man born in 1998 or later to get over 200 tour-level career wins.
Playing Style
Stefanos Tsitsipas is an aggressive baseliner who is well-known for being an all-court type of player. He tends to hit powerful groundstrokes and has a particularly strong forehand, which he is known to hit using an Eastern grip.
His favorite shot is his one-handed backhand, which is notable because it is rarely used in modern tennis play.
What Kind of Watches are in Stefanos Tsitsipas’s Watch Collection?
In 2019, Stefanos Tsitsipas was named an official brand ambassador for Rolex, making him the youngest person ever to achieve this honor. Considering Rolex’s long and storied history with the sport of tennis, however, it makes complete sense that they would choose to sponsor such an impressive young athlete in this arena.
Most recently, Stefanos Tsitsipas has been spotted wearing a Rolex Daytona 116500 with a ceramic bezel during postgame interviews.
