Even though he would most certainly disagree with this assessment, there are few comedians who have had more of an impact or become more beloved, over the last few decades than Steve Carell. Known for both his hilarious body of film and television work and his genuine kindness towards co-stars and fans, Carell is one of the most consistently popular comedy performers working today.

And while many know his name and his work, it is unlikely that they know that Carell is something of a watch collector when he is not making us laugh onscreen. With that in mind, Rubber B is going to take a closer look at the life, career, and watch collection of this treasured comedian, actor, writer, and producer.

Who is Steve Carell?

Steven John Carell was born on August 16th, 1962, in Concord, Massachusetts. His father, Edwin, was an electrical engineer, and his mother, Harriet, was a psychiatric nurse. His father’s surname was originally Caroselli, but the family changed it sometime in the 1950s.

Carell played lacrosse and hockey while in high school, and also played the fife as well. He had a strong interest in history and would graduate with a degree in the subject from Denison University in 1984.

Steve Carell’s Early Show Business Career

Carell would work as a disc jockey under the name “Sapphire Steve Carell” at WDUB, the campus radio station, during his college years. He would then relocate back to Massachusetts, where he briefly worked as a mail carrier. However, he was asked to leave the position after only seven months by his boss, who stated that he wasn’t fast enough at the job.

He would go on to act in a touring children’s theater company and on local television commercials before joining Second City in Chicago.

The Office and Mainstream Success

In 1991, Carell joined Second City, where he was understudied by Stephen Colbert. He would debut that same year in a small role in Curly Sue, written and directed by the late film legend John Hughes. Carell would gain a reputation during his time at Second City as one of the standout players in the company.

After a brief stint on The Dana Carvey Show, Carell would go on the join The Daily Show as a correspondent from 1999 to 2005, which saw him once again reunite with Colbert. However, in 2005, Carell would truly become a superstar and break out into the mainstream.

That would be the year that The Office would premier on NBC, and Carell would step into the role of (sometimes) dim-witted but well-meaning Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott. The show would become a massive success, and Carell’s character would go on to be one of the most immediately recognizable characters in sitcom history. The character of Michael Scott is often cited as one of the most popular in polls about sitcom characters.

Carell has two large film projects on the horizon in 2023 and 2024. 2023 will see him working with Wes Anderson for the first time in Asteroid City, and the latter project will see him reuniting with fellow Office alum John Krasinski for the fantasy comedy IF.
