There are few comedians today who have the prominent profile that Steve Harvey has managed to acquire over the last several years. Now one of the most recognizable figures working in television today, Harvey had a long and challenging road to overcome in order to reach the level of success that he has acquired today.
Harvey is also a watch collector as well, and with that in mind, we will learn more about the life, career, and watch collection of the iconic “Family Feud” host and stand-up comedian.
Who is Steve Harvey?
Steve Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, to Jesse, a coal miner, and Eloise Vera. His father was a coal miner, and the family struggled financially in his youth. He would graduate from Glenville High School in 1974 and attend Kent State University and West Virginia University, though he would not graduate from either institution.
Speaking about this time in his life in a later interview, Harvey noted that “It really threw my life into a downward spiral, and I regret not getting that degree.”
Steve Harvey’s Early Comedy Career
Previously, Harvey has worked as a boxer, an autoworker, an insurance salesman, carpet cleaner, and mail carrier. He would do his first stand-up comedy set on October 8th, 1985, at Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio. In the late 1980’s, Harvey was homeless for three years, sleeping in his car when doing gigs where the club would not provide a hotel.
During this time, a married couple named Rich and Becky Liss would prove pivotal in helping Harvey overcomes these times, as they would provide him with a contract for carpet cleaning work and also secure his credit at a travel agency.
Mainstream Success in Comedy and Television
Harvey’s first notable moment of mainstream success was when he won the second annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1990. This would lead to him taking over as the host of “Showtime at the Apollo,” where he would step in after the departure of fellow comic and long-time host Mark Curry.
He would eventually receive a short-lived sitcom, “Me and the Boys,” which would run for one season on ABC in 1994. In 1996, Harvey would star on “The Steve Harvey Show,” which ran from 1996 to 2002. For many people, this was their first exposure to the comedian, and the show would remain popular throughout its run. It would also co-star Cedric the Entertainer and Lori Beth Denburg, two other notable comic actors.
At the turn of the millennium, Harvey would have what was arguably the most significant moment in his entire career up to that point. The year 2000 would see the release of the legendary stand-up comedy film “The Original Kings of Comedy,” which remains the highest-grossing comedy tour of all time. That film would also go on to expose national audiences to Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer in ways they had not previously seen them before, as well as introducing many people to the late, great Bernie Mac, who would close out the set. D.L. Hughley was the fourth comedian on the tour, with all of them performing very well-received sets.
Harvey would then use that platform to secure himself a job hosting a daily morning radio show, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show,” as well as hosting the current iteration of “Family Feud.” He now also hosts an arbitration show, “Judge Steve Harvey,” for ABC as well. When he is not working on television hosting projects, he is also an author as well. His most notable literary outing was the self-help book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” which was turned into a film in 2012.
What Watches are in Steve Harvey’s Watch Collection?
Steve Harvey is something of a Rolex connoisseur, as he owns two notable watches from the brand. He currently has a Rolex Daytona, which remains one of the brand’s most sought-after watches, and a Rolex Day-Date 40 as well.
