We consider educating people about different parts of the world of watchmaking to be an integral part of Rubber B’s overall ethos and are always grateful for the opportunity to do so whenever it arises.

Rolex is arguably the most recognizable watchmaking company in the world, and for many people, owning a Rolex is something they dream about for many years. However, some people may find this daunting because they think that all Rolex timepieces are priced at tens of thousands of dollars – this is simply not the case. Just as with any other product, there are different pricing tiers when it comes to Rolex watches.

With that in mind, we are going to take a look at three different watches in three different pricing tiers. For our purposes, we will refer to them as entry-level, intermediate, and most expensive.

It is also important to note at the outset that, before buying any kind of luxury timepiece, you should always verify its authenticity by making certain that you are purchasing the piece in question from a certified dealer or an online vendor that you can trust. Unfortunately, the internet makes it easier for unscrupulous people to sell counterfeit timepieces, so you, as the consumer, must always be vigilant when purchasing a new watch.

This simple rule of thumb will always be helpful in these kinds of matters – if an offer seems too good to be true, it most certainly is.  With that being said, let’s look more closely at the different pricing tiers of Rolex watches.

Entry-Level Watch – Rolex Air-King

For those who are new to watch collecting and are looking to purchase their first Rolex timepiece, a great place to start is with the Rolex Air-King.  The newest version of this watch, the 116900, was released just a few years ago and retails for a very reasonable $6,200. This timepiece is also always produced in stainless steel, which means that all models of this watch make a great entry point into the world of watch collecting.

Older versions of this watch sell for less than $4,000 on the gray market, so no matter which version of this watch you choose to go with, you will have found a reliable cornerstone from which you can continue to build your collection.

Intermediate Level Watch – Oyster Perpetual

This is one of the most recognizable watches in the world, and arguably the one that helped Rolex build the reputation that it has today as a leader in technological innovation with regards to watchmaking. It was used by champion swimmer Mercedes Gleitze during her attempt to swim the English Channel, making her the first woman in the world to do so.

With its deep blue dial and elegant casing, a newer version of the Oyster Perpetual will cost, on average, about $7,000 on the gray market. However, older models retail for much less than that, so this is a great watch to look into if you’re looking for something a little more expensive than entry-level but still don’t want to break the bank.

Most Expensive – Paul Newman Rolex – Cosmograph Daytona

Though there were several other watches that we could have used for this example, we felt it appropriate to use, quite literally, the most expensive watch in the world – the Rolex Daytona 6239. When people use the phrase “Holy Grail of watch collecting,” they are almost certainly referring to this specific timepiece.

It is one of the most sought after timepieces in the world, and its current retail price reflects that. This watch, if you are even able to find one, retails for approximately 20 million dollars, and as such, it is extremely difficult to come by.
