On May 25, 2021, the new Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 was introduced, and anticipation was high. The Ceramic was a symbol of the Tudor whimsical use of materials for Tudor. The Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 was a surprise to most watch lovers. Tudor is not the company’s first ceramic watch – the Tudor Black Bay One is (only produced for the Tudor Watch Auction in 2019, which went for 350,000 Swiss francs). Tudor’s new Tudor Black Bay Ceramic was the first ceramic Black Bay made on a regular basis.
Although ceramic has become more commonplace for timepieces, (especially for bezel materials) it’s a fairly new concept to have the entire timepiece made of ceramic. The use of predominantly ceramic materials on the case increases the price of the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001. Ceramics is generally lower in density and lighter in weight, especially when compared to steel model watches. The ceramic material on the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 is also harder and more durable than that of other materials, making it more expensive.
The Tudor Black Bay Ceramic mixes current, high-tech elements with subtle nods to its historic significance. Its matt black monobloc ceramic casing features sand-blasted surfaces with beveled edges that are mirror-polished for a striking contrast and finished with extremely strong lines. Its rotatable bezel insert is similarly made of black ceramic with a sunray smooth finish. The etched graduations in comparable tones create a complementing extra matt element that responds softly to variations in light. Its dial is likewise black on black, with the sole difference being attached hour markings made of off-white luminous material. Finally, there’s a black leather and rubber strap with a “Snowflake” design on the inside and a folding clasp, as well as a complementing black fabric strap with a cream band that completes the stealthy black look of this model. The Manufacture Calibre MT5602-1U can function within a tolerance range of 5 seconds (0 +5) because of its non-magnetic silicon hairspring.
On the Wrist
The Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 is comparable to other 41mm Black Bay timepieces, however, is most differentiated by the weight and feel of the watch while wearing it. The Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 is thinner than the standard Black Bay models, with a smaller case thickness of only 14.4mm vs the standard models which are 15mm.
Still, the 41mm and the 50mm length from lug to lug, the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic M79210CNU-0001 timepiece fits mainly on the wrist and is sure to make a statement.
