What is a Tachymeter?

Funnily enough, many people actually have a tachymeter on their watch and are not even aware of the feature in the first place. This makes sense though because as you will see in our next section, it is meant to be used only for a series of fairly specific tasks.

The simplest explanation as to what a tachymeter is would be to tell you that, as you are reading this article, stop and look at your watch, if you are currently wearing one. Does the bezel have a series of numbers that progressively increase as they rotate around the bezel? If so, your watch has a tachymeter on it – this feature is starting to become more commonplace on luxury watches, and is prominently featured on several Rolex and Omega timepieces already.

How is a Tachymeter Meant to Be Used?

As we mentioned earlier in the article, the reason that people aren’t overly familiar with tachymeters is that they kind of have a niche usage and aren’t meant to be used in everyday life. Technically speaking, the tachymeter is designed to measure “units per hour” – but in layman’s terms, what does that mean?

In the simplest possible terms, a tachymeter can tell you how many times a task can be done in an hour. To help elucidate on this concept a little further, take a moment to set the following scene in your mind’s eye:

(insert image here)

At the Acme Widget Company, the Manager wants to see how long it takes his best Widget Maker to successfully manufacture one widget. He starts his chronographer and sees that it takes the employee 50 seconds to make one widget, with the right hand had stopped on 63 on the tachymeter. That means that the Widget Maker can make over 60 widgets in one hour.

Originally, tachymeters were designed to help determine how fast race cars were going in miles per hour during a race, and they are still used in that arena today. They are also sometimes used by professionals in the business and manufacturing sectors in order to time tasks, as well as by scientists who need extremely precise measurements for their work.

Because there are only a handful of people who had the need for the feature in the first place, the use of the tachymeter never became what one would call “mainstream.” However, if your watch should have one on it, you are now able to use it and take advantage of an entirely new (to you) function on your timepiece.
