In this blog entry, we are going to cover an incredibly important topic that we have not previously written about here before: when to service your Rolex. Knowing when to service your Rolex watch is vitally important, and so we will further delve into why knowing when to service your watch is important, why the watches need to be serviced at all, and then we will look at how often your Rolex watch actually needs to be serviced.

Why Is It Important to Know When to Service Your Rolex?

While we don’t often think of them in this fashion, at the end of the day, a watch is still very much a machine. And just like any other machine, no matter how well it is constructed, it is still going to need maintenance and repair from time to time.

Knowing when to service your Rolex will help ensure that your watch is running in the most efficient fashion possible. Additionally, it will help ensure that the watch continues to work correctly for decades to come, which is especially important if you are considering passing the watch on to another family member at some point.

Why Do Rolex Watches Need to be Serviced?

In order to actually fully answer this question, it is important to have a basic understanding of how a watch actually works from a mechanical standpoint.

The components of a watch, such as its movement and various gears, must often grind against one another in order for the watch to work correctly. In order to ease this mechanical tension and help the parts inside of the watch last for as long as possible, special lubricants are used with the express goal of helping to reduce friction.

However, over time, these lubricants will naturally break down and become less effective. This means that the components in your watch will ultimately begin to function less effectively and ultimately need to be serviced.

An interesting thing to note here is how technology has vastly improved this process over time since the invention, and introduction of, wristwatches to the general public. When wristwatches were first being produced and sold, they often needed to be repaired and serviced every one to two years.

However, with the various improvements in both mechanical component durability and the lubricants used in the watches themselves, the amount of time between necessary scheduled service appointments has increased significantly through the years.

How Often Should You Have Your Rolex Watch Serviced?

Generally speaking, Rolex has stated that you should have your Rolex watch serviced around once every ten years or so. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and depending on what type of watch you own, it is important that you are made aware of them.

The first thing of note to point out is that the ten-year benchmark is just that – a benchmark – and not an exact rule or science. That means that it is best to speak with a trusted watch repair specialist and ask them if ten years is sufficient, or if your watch may need more frequent repairs for whatever reason.

The other important thing to note is that it is much harder to have an older Rolex watch serviced. The reason for this is that those parts are significantly harder to come by, which means that they make take longer to locate.

Rolex works very hard at controlling who has access to their watch parts. This means that when attempting to find someone who can successfully repair your Rolex, it is very important to make certain that they are only using genuine Rolex watch parts during the course of the service.
