Who is Zhou Dongyu?
Zhou Dongyu was born on January 31st, 1992 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China to a working-class family. When she was in the third grade, her father tragically passed away from a car accident, and her mother would remarry afterward. As a child, she had an interest in gymnastics and would later join her school’s competitive gymnastics team.
Zhou Dongyu’s Early Show Business Career
In 2010, Dongyu was selected by esteemed Chinese director Zhang Yimou to star in his film “Under the Hawthorn Tree.” This was highly unusual at the time, as Dongyu has never acted professionally before. However, her performance was well received, and she would win several awards at film festivals that year for it.
She would star in a number of films after that initial performance, including “The Road of Exploring,” a political war drama, and “My Old Classmate,” a youth-themed romantic drama. She would continue to gain traction in the Chinese market, as audiences responded well to her friendly demeanor and warm style of performance.
“Soul Mate” and Mainstream Success
In 2016, Dongyu would achieve her true breakthrough with her lead role in the romantic drama “Soul Mate.” Her performance was so well received that she would go on to win the Best Actress award at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. These awards are the Chinese equivalent of the American Academy Awards.
The same year, she would also make her first appearance in a regular television show as the lead role in the spy drama “Sparrow.” She would go on to act in several other television shows and films continuously until 2021. She has made a few special appearances in films since that time but has not been in a full role since then.
She still maintains a significant fan base in China and abroad, and audiences are hoping to see her return to the silver screen in the near future.
