Who Is Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Zlatan Ibrahimović was born on October 3, 1981, in Malmo, Sweden. His father, Sefik, was of Bosnian origin, and his mother, Jurka, was from Croatia. At some point during his childhood, his parents separated.

Ibrahimović’s early life was chaotic, and he would often spend time moving back and forth between his mother’s and father’s homes. Neither parent was fiscally stable, which would cause tension between Zlatan and his family.

That lack of financial security would play a pivotal role in how Ibrahimović would play soccer. His classmates would often judge him because his clothes weren’t as nice. Author David Lagercrantz, who co-wrote I Am Zlatan, quoted him as saying, “‘David, I need to be angry to play well’. When he played with middle-class kids he felt inferior because he wore the wrong clothes and had no money, so he said to himself ‘One day I’ll show them!’ That became his motivation.” 

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Early Athletic Career

Ibrahimović began playing soccer at the age of six. He would play for a number of different clubs in his youth, including FBK Balkan, Malmo Bl, and BK Flagg. He would eventually join Malmo FF, his hometown soccer team, as part of their youth division.

Malmo FF and Mainstream Success

After signing with Malmo FF in 1999 as part of their professional team, Ibrahimović would embark on one of the longest professional soccer careers in the sport’s history.
