The first Rolex Submariner was released at Baselworld in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Submariners. Small but significant details were changed from the original all-steel version to create the newer model. 

The most distinguishing feature of the new Rolex Submariner is the green aluminum bezel, which was a big variation from the classic steel version. Initially, Rolex enthusiasts were skeptical about the green Rolex Submariner, now it is one of the most popular iconic tool watches from Rolex. 

In the past, there were only two versions of Rolex Submariner for consumers to choose from, the inaugural Green Submariner or “The Kermit” and its younger sibling, “The Hulk”. Over the last decade, Rolex has released four new models of the Rolex Submariner, three of which were the green version, including one with the green bezel and black dial. Eventually, the green Submariner grew a cult following with Rolex enthusiasts and was nicknamed “Kermit” after the Muppets Character.

Kermit Vs. Hulk

The Kermit green Rolex Submariner has evolved over the years and comes in several variations in different shades of green. The Rolex Kermit watch was the first to introduce the green collection of Rolex Submariners. The “Hulk” version of Rolex Submariner was first introduced in 2010 which featured a darker shade of green on its bezel. Rolex enthusiasts coined the nickname “Hulk” Submariner for this watch for its bolder look than the Kermit Submariner.

The Rolex Hulk includes a Super Case with larger-sized lugs, crown guard, and bezel, it has a bulkier appearance without changing the dimensions of the watch. 

The Hulk version Rolex Submariner replaced Kermit’s aluminum bezel and now included a Cerachrom ceramic bezel that has a more saturated forest green color than the more olive color on the bezel of the Kermit.

Rolex Kermit II – 2020

The most noticeable difference in the newest released version of the Rolex Kermit is the rich green sunburst pattern dial which is shinier and more eye-catching than the original 2003 version of Rolex Kermit.

The Kermit II features many upgrades that can also be found in the newer post-2010 Rolex Submariners. The 2020 edition of Rolex Submariners is slimmer and has more vintage-inspired features and the case size is increased to 41mm. The older Kermit also had more of a Kelly Green toned bezel, whereas the newer 2020 version has a Forest Green colored hue, this is especially noticed when comparing the watches from above.   

The Rolex Kermit II features the new Rolex generation caliber 32-35 movement and is an upgrade from the previous version which had a 31-35 caliber movement.
