Launched in 2015, the Rolex Yacht-Master II 44mm 116689 turned out to be one of the most unique modern Rolex and one of the most complicated Rolexes ever created. This timepiece is termed “gray gold” in the horology industry, it is 18 karats of white gold all the way through the material. The bezel on the 116689 is made of solid platinum on both the insert and the bezel and is also a part of the 116689 Yacht-Master internal movement called Ring Command, this is also featured in the Rolex Sky-Dweller.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 116689 has a programmable countdown memory. To use this, you stop the chronograph and pull the crown out to the first position, then turn the bezel all the way counterclockwise, then push the button at the four o’clock position, and then you are able to set the time for your countdown. To program the memory, you start the chronograph, and then it will countdown what you programmed until zero. This feature of the 116689 is meant to set the time and countdown to start a race or competition. The 116689 is a Yachtsman’s watch that is a fly-back chronograph so it will then fly back to your designated minute.

The dial on the Yacht-Master 116689 is not silver-white, but solid white with red, white, and blue details giving it a sporty look. This Yacht-master 116689 watch also features lume for easy readability in the dark; later, Rolex would introduce the Chromalight version. This timepiece holds a unique caliber for Rolex, along with the most complex movement. The caliber of the Yacht-Master 116689 watch is caliber 4161.
