Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” will have its tenth anniversary next year, and to this day, it remains one of the director’s most controversial and acclaimed motion pictures. One thing that viewers noticed was that the majority of characters were wearing various luxury watches throughout the film, which was in keeping with its setting and time period.

In honor of the film’s upcoming anniversary, it is worth taking a closer look at some of the more notable timepieces that were featured in the film.

What Was The Wolf of Wall Street About?

“The Wolf of Wall Street” was a 2013 biopic black comedy that focused on the life of Jordan Belfort, who was portrayed in the film by Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film recounts Belfort’s rise and falls within the world of the New York stockbroker scene of the 1980s. While Belfort was an extremely shrewd public speaker and salesperson, he also defrauded investors for hundreds of millions of dollars and was eventually run out of Wall Street.

Belfort had a serious drug addiction as well, and the film did not shy away from depicting the debauched lifestyle that Belfort and his employees were living at the time. Because of this, the film was either heavily censored or outright banned in various countries around the world.

Leonardo DiCaprio – Jordan Belfort – Wolf of Wall Street Watches

DiCaprio’s character is a likable but amoral hustler, so it makes sense that he would want to wear something flashy to look the part, and he most certainly does. DiCaprio is seen wearing multiple Tag Heuer watches throughout the film, as he has a professional relationship with the company, and has had one for several years.

DiCaprio, for most of the film, is seen wearing a Tag Heuer 1000 Quart 18k Gold. The film is set in the late 1980s, so this watch has long since been discontinued, but it certainly fits the part of a flashy banker and stock broker to a T.

He is also seen wearing the Tag Heuer 2000 Exclusive ref. WN5141, which is gold plated and has a diamond bezel. He is seen wearing this later in the film after his character has reached the peak of his success.

Matthew McConaughey – Mark Hanna – Wolf of Wall Street Watches

Matthew McConaughey has a small, but notable role, at the beginning of the film as Mark Hanna, the flashy and brazen Wall Street guru who inspires Belfort to take as much money from the world as he possibly can.

In the movie, his character is seen wearing a Rolex Datejust 16233 Dual Tone Jubilee watch. Again, this is not only a period-appropriate choice, as this watch was prominent in the 1980s, but it also fits the character, and his whole outlook on life, very well.

Jonah Hill – Donnie Azoff – Wolf of Wall Street Watches

Jonah Hill would receive an Academy Award nomination for playing Donnie Azoff, Jordan Belfort’s best friend and fellow con man. Hill is seen wearing a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116528 18k in the film, which is flashy but not as flashy as DiCaprio’s character. This reflects the dynamic of their relationship throughout the film.

IWC Big Pilots – Wolf of Wall Street Watches

The film itself is a testament to luxury watches, and not just Tag Heuer and Rolex watch. In fact, many of the supporting cast can be spotted wearing simple yet elegant IWC Big Pilot watches as well throughout the movie. This should come as no surprise given DiCaprio’s ambassadorship for Tag Heuer and the film’s director Martin Scorsese’s ambassadorship for Rolex—the movie had to have some fancy watches!
