Even those who do not follow combat sports are aware of the unavoidable force of nature that is Connor McGregor. One of the world’s most dominant mixed martial artists of the last decade, McGregor had a meteoric rise to fame that few fighters in the UFC ever get to experience. This was helped by, in no small part, his ostentatious personality.
McGregor is also well-known for his flashy sense of fashion, including a very prodigious, and very expensive, watch collection. With that in mind, we will now further explore the life, career, and watch collection of the man known around the world as “Notorious.”
Who is Connor McGregor?
Connor McGregor was born on July 14th, 1988 in Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland to Tony and Margaret McGregor. In his youth, he showed an early interest in athletics, playing soccer for Lourdes Celtic Football Club. He would also begin boxing at the age of twelve to increase his confidence and defend himself against bullies.
While completing a plumbing apprenticeship, he met future MMA fighter Tom Egan, and the two began training together. McGregor would then decide to focus on a full-time career in MMA.
Connor McGregor’s Early Athletic Career
McGregor would have his first professional MMA fight on March 9, 2008, defeating Gary Morris in the second round with a technical knockout for the Irish promotion Ring of Truth. McGregor would spend the next five years fighting in various promotions around Ireland. In 2013, after a meeting with Dana White, he was offered a contract to fight in the UFC.
Mainstream Success in the UFC
McGregor had been angling to get into the UFC for half a decade. Therefore, he wanted to make certain that his debut fight was a memorable one, and he succeeded, beating Marcus Brimage at UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi. He would decisively win the fight by a first-round knockout and go on to earn his first “Knockout of the Night” award as well.
McGregor would have a number of notable victories in the mid-2010s, and he developed a reputation for his excessively theatrical persona and tendency to trash-talk opponents before a fight. He would often borrow a page from the legendary Muhammad Ali and tell opponents what round he was going to knock them out in during pre-fight interviews. Fight fans found the spectacle impossible to ignore.
On August 10th, 2015, McGregor would go on to win his first championship fight, against Jose Aldo, in the first round.
The following year would prove to be one of the most significant in McGregor’s career. He would go on to have his first UFC loss, against Nate Diaz. However, he would end the year being the champion in two different weight classes, making him the first fighter in UFC history to accomplish this feat.
Future Projects
McGregor has not appeared in the Octagon since July of 2021, where he lost a fight against Dustin Poirier due to having an injured tibia. McGregor has stated that he wishes to return to MMA in 2023, but he currently has no fights slated at this time.
He is also expected to appear opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in a remake of the film “Road House” as well.
