Who is Michelle Yeoh?
Michelle Yeoh was born Yeoh Choo Kheng on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. Her father, Datuk, was a successful businessman who had founded a successful bus company, and he later went into politics, becoming the chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Association. Her mother, Janet, was a homemaker.
Yeoh had serious aspirations toward a career as a ballet dancer. When she was 15, she and her family moved to the United Kingdom so that she could further her ballet career. A spinal cord injury several years later would end her career as a dancer, so she turned her attention to choreography.
Michelle Yeoh’s Early Show Business Career
In 1983, Yeoh, who was only 20 years old at the time, won the Miss Malaysia World contest. This would lead to her getting to work with Jackie Chan on a commercial. Chan was already an established name in Hong Kong cinema at the time. The following year, she would make her film debut in “The Owl Vs. Bombo,” an action comedy directed by Hong Kong film legend Sammo Hung.
In 1985, she would appear in her first lead role, in the film “Yes, Madam.” She began to develop a fanbase, in part because she performed her own martial arts and stuntwork, which was not common at the time. Two years later, she would marry Dickson Poon, a prominent businessman, and retire from acting.
She would return to acting 5 years later in 1992, appearing in “Police Story 3: Super Cop,” which she co-starred in along with Jackie Chan. In 1997, she would appear in her first English language role as Wai Lin in 1997’s “Tomorrow Never Dies.” The second of Pierce Brosnan’s run of Bond films, Wai Lin was the first Asian “Bond Girl” in the series’ history.
“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and Mainstream Success
While appearing in a Bond film certainly increased Yeoh’s exposure, it would be another three years before American audiences would come to know Yeoh. In 2000, she appeared alongside Chow Yun Fat in the romantic martial arts epic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” which was directed by Ang Lee. The film was wildly successful, both in the United States and around the world, and opened various doors for Yeoh.
Yeoh would work steadily over the next 20 years, with her most recent appearance being in 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” She will be seen next in “A Haunting in Venice,” which is the next film in Kenneth Branaugh’s ongoing Hercule Poirot series.
