Available in 18 carat white gold or rose gold, the Patek Philippe 5230 World Time Watch is new in 2016, featuring country names updated to reflect all of the timezones of the planet. Due to changes in time zone names over the past few years, this watch replaces previous dials with a current and accurate list. Its functions are guaranteed by the caliber 240 HU – an ultra-thin self-winding mechanical movement manufactured by the watchmaker.
The Calatrava case of the new 5230 received some modifications, overseen by Sandrine Stern, the wife of the president of the company, Thierry Stern. The winglet-style lugs and smooth bezel saw some changes, shown in the photo above, that set it apart from previous versions of this model. The shape of the hands also saw improvements. The ringed hour hand and Dauphine minute hand of previous models were replaced with a pierced hour hand in the shape of the Southern Cross constellation. The minute hand now features a lozenge-shaped contour. Both are crafted from 18 carat white gold to match the case.
The 24-hour display differentiates between day and night and provides travelers with a quick and easy way to reference their home time when abroad. In an era when you can jump on a plane and end up anywhere on the planet, a World Time watch doubles as both a fine timepiece and a useful tool. There are moments, like when you’re on a flight or in a formal setting, where checking your smartphone is not an option. This makes glancing at your watch and being able to tell the time across the globe quite convenient.
There are many models by reputable watchmakers that have a 24-hour hand a display, but none with the sophistication and attention to detail that Patek Philippe has imbued into the 5230. To view more information about this model and to see pictures of the rose gold configuration, visit patek.com.
