The Panerai Tuttonero – Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica – 44mm reference PAM00438 is a stunning timepiece with its gorgeous 44mm matt black ceramic case and band, and black dial.  If the superhero Batman had to pick a timepiece, this would be his choice.  However, don’t let the dark appearance fool you. 

In the daytime, the hour markers are a beige color which is both highly visible and classic looking.  This coloring is followed through in the hour, minute, and 24 hour GMT hands, as well as the small second’s dial.  In the dark, the PAM00438 is brightly illuminated on its blue-green luminescent hour numerals, small second 12, 9, 6 and 3 o’clock positions, and on the hour, minute, 24 hour, and small seconds hands.  Even next to the date aperture there is a small luminescent dash indicating the 3 o’clock position.

The movement is an automatic caliber P.9001/B, executed entirely by Panerai.  It is built with a Glucydur balance, an Incabloc anti-shock device and a power reserve of 3 days.  It beats at 28,800 alterations per hour. The movement itself has undergone a black galvanic treatment process which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal on the back of the timepiece.  

In addition to the engraved “TUTTONERO” on the back, the PAM00438 also displays a power reserve indicator, which retains the minimalistic look on the front dial and clears room for other functions such as the small seconds and date window. The P.9001/B starts off from a P.9001 base.  It is an automatic movement with 29 jewels, 229 components, and 13 3/4.    It has double barrels, a seconds reset device, a date window, and a GMT function.

The Panerai Tuttonero – Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica reference PAM00438 has several standard features of the Panerai Luminor 1950 line.  The GMT 24-hour hand allows for a 2^nd timezone.  Although there are no 24-hour markers as in some GMT timepieces, the 2^nd timezone can be viewed as part of a standard 12-hour clock.  This is certainly a more natural way to view a time since you will never have to convert a 13 position into 1 o’clock. 

The large winding crown is protected by Panerai’s trademark protection device in matching black ceramic.  The reference PAM00438 is water-resistant to 300 feet.  The protection device not only protects the crown but also provides a tighter waterproofness when it is in a locked position.  In some timepieces, it might be easy to forget to screw down the crown to its most waterproof position.  This is not the case with Panerai.  If the locking device is undone, it is easy to notice, and therefore less likely to cause an accidental infiltration of water into this fine timepiece.

The Tuttonero is not only a stunning timepiece but completely practical.  The features of the 24 hour GMT function extend the features that might help pilots or world travelers keep in tune with their original timezone without giving up beauty with markings around the dial.  The dark case is very masculine, but women could easily enjoy this timepiece just the same. 

Although the Tuttonero is not currently sold, Panerai has a new version, the PAM01438 which not only is available with similar features but is available at the price of $14,900.  The PAM01438 has the same DLC coating and the 24 hour hand.  However, it is powered by a newer P.9010/GMT caliber which has 31 jewels and 199 components.
