As part of our ongoing series of blog posts about cast members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this entry is going to take a look at one of that group’s most interesting, and certainly stylish, members: Benedict Cumberbatch.
To many American filmgoers, the image of Benedict Cumberbatch that they immediately conjure up in their mind’s eye when they hear his name is that of the Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange, from his multiple appearances in the MCU, including several solo outings, with one on the way later this year. However, what many may not know about him is that he is also a noted watch collector and a classically trained thespian, so let’s take a few moments to further examine the life, work, and timepiece collection of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Who is Benedict Cumberbatch?
Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976, in Hammersmith, a section of London, England to actors Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham. He has a half-sister, Tracy, from his mother’s previous marriage. As a child, Benedict grew up in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
On his father’s side, Benedict Cumberbatch is of noble heritage, as he is the third cousin 16 times removed of King Richard III, whom he would go in to portray in the television series “The Hollow Crown” in 2016. He would attend his reburial in 2015 and read a poem during the ceremony as well.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Early Beginnings in Show Business
Benedict Cumberbatch has been acting since he was a child and made his debut as Titania, Queen of the Fairies, in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” when he was 12. Cumberbatch’s drama teacher, Martin Tyrell, called him “the best schoolboy actor” he had ever worked with.
Despite his prodigious talent, he warned him against pursuing a career in the arts full-time due to the difficult and unstable nature of the business. Undeterred by these warnings, Cumberbatch decided to follow his passion and pursue acting full-time anyway.
Mainstream Success and Future Endeavors
Though many people know Benedict Cumberbatch from his myriad appearances in films and television shows, his first love is the stage. Since 2001, Cumberbatch has had major roles in a dozen classic plays and he was nominated for an Olivier Award for his appearance in “Hedda Gabler” during his first appearance in the West End in 2005.
After appearing in a variety of films, plays, and television programs, particularly for the BBC, in his native England, Cumberbatch would begin playing Sherlock Holmes alongside Martin Freeman’s Dr. John Watson in the joint BBC/PBS production “Sherlock.”
Though he had already long broken through in the United Kingdom, this role would prove to be crucially important for him, as it would be his breakthrough role in the United States and allow him to have international success. His portrayal of Sherlock would win him legions of fans and catapult him to a stratospheric level of success.
The resulting success would lead to him working in a wide variety of A-list Hollywood films, including large scale action epics, such as “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” wherein he voiced Smaug, the villainous dragon, a role he would reprise again, and Star Trek: Into Darkness, where he played the famous villain Khan.
In 2014, he would portray Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” for which he would receive an Academy Award nomination. Two years later, he would finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dr. Stephen Strange, thereby introducing magic into the MCU and opening up, quite literally, a whole new dimension of storytelling potential for Marvel.
While he will next be seen as Dr. Strange in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” he also received rave reviews for his appearance in 2021’s “The Power of the Dog,” which was a Jane Campion western which premiered on Netflix in December of that year.
What Kind of Watches Does Benedict Cumberbatch Have in His Collection?
In recent years, Benedict Cumberbatch has become a brand ambassador for Jaeger-LeCoultre. As a result, he owns several impressive luxury timepieces from that brand, including a Jaeger-LeCoultre Ultra-Thin Perpetual and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Rouge 1931. He has also been spotted wearing a TAG Heuer Monaco chronograph and a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona., though these are likely far from the only pieces in his personal collection.
