We thought it would be more than fitting to run a very special piece honoring the late, great Chadwick Boseman, who memorably portrayed T’Challa, better known as the Black Panther, in several superhero films for Marvel.

With Audemars Piguet and Marvel releasing a special Black Panther-themed timepiece, now seemed like an excellent time to honor Chadwick Boseman’s life and career, see what the next iteration of the “Black Panther” film franchise will be, and also learn more about the timepiece itself.

Who Was Chadwick Boseman?

Chadwick Aaron Boseman was an actor, director, and playwright who attended Howard University and came to prominence for his portrayal of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson in the film “42,” which was released in 2013. The following year, he would portray James Brown in the biopic “Get on Up,” and he began to develop a reputation for portraying prominent modern historical figures.

In 2016, his life would change forever, though, as he would portray the role with which he would become forever identified, and the one with which audiences still immediately identify him with today – T’Challa, the king of Wakanda, who first appears in “Captain America: Civil War.”

The following year, Boseman would play Thurgood Marshall in the biopic “Marshall,” which would be the final time that he would play a notable historical figure on the screen. 2018 would arguably be the single most important year of his career, as it would see the release of the standalone “Black Panther,” which marked the first time that any MCU film had a person of color as the lead.

The film was critically heralded and was a box office smash, generating 1.34 billion dollars at the box office. He would play the character two more times, in the final two Avengers films, “Infinity War” and “Endgame.”

2019 would see the release of “21 Bridges,” which saw him in the role of a hard-boiled detective, and 2020 would see the release of his final two films: “Da 5 Bloods” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” the latter of which saw him receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Tragically, Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of only 43 from colon cancer on August 28, 2020. The news came as a complete surprise to many, as only his family and closest friends knew about his diagnosis. Upon news of his passing, a plethora of tributes and memorials were offered by many of his peers in the industry, reflecting on how sincerely beloved and respected he was by those in his fields and amongst his many fans.

What Are The Future Plans For the “Black Panther” Franchise?

An upcoming sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” is slated to be released on November 11th, 2022. The majority of the cast from the first film is slated to return, and several of those characters will have larger roles than they did in the previous outing.

Boseman did not disclose his health issues to writer/director Ryan Coogler or Marvel head Kevin Feige, so his passing came as a sudden shock to them and caused them to significantly restructure what their original plans for the film had been at the time.

Feige has also been adamant about the fact that, as of this time, the role of T’Challa will not be recast. Cooger is also developing a Wakanda set television series for Disney +.

What Do You Need to Know About the Black Panther Watch?

In April of 2021, Audemars Piguet, in collaboration with Marvel, released the Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon, which is the first watch they have slated to put out as part of a continuing partnership with the venerated comics publisher.

The dial is set in gray, black, and purple accents, and has a deeply detailed etching of the Black Panther as the centerpiece of the watch. The amount of detail is simply incredible, and Audemars Piguet has decided to make the watch a limited edition series by only producing 250 of these amazing pieces. As such, they are retailing for between $400,000 to $500,000, if you are able to even locate one of these watches in the first place.
