1. Monster
While this certainly wasn’t her first film, it is the one that turned her into a proper “actress,” as she would win an Academy Award for her harrowing portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos. The film was released in 2003 but is still as harrowing to watch now as it was when it was initially released.
2. Aeon Flux
This film ended up proving to be an important stepping stone in Charlize’s career, as it was the first time she would play an action hero of any sort. It’s a fun, cheesy ride on its own merit, but it is more notable for the doors it would open for her later in her career as she would reinvent herself as an action star.
3. Atomic Blonde
This 2017 spy thriller would give a whole new meaning to the term “knockout” when describing Charlize, as she gives one of her most physical performances ever as tough as nails MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton. Sleek, stylish, and strong, she was called a female James Bond after this film was released – and rightly so.
4. Mad Max: Fury Road
From a purely technical filmmaking standpoint, this film will likely remain the pinnacle of Charlize Theron’s entire career. Her role as Imperator Furiosa became almost as iconic as Mad Max himself, and after watching her get behind the wheel and more than hold her own with the boys, it is easy to see why.
5. Prometheus
To this day, this film is still a cause of great debate among passionate fans of the long-running “Alien” franchise, and the reviews for it were mixed as well, though that had more to do with the script than anything else. One thing everyone agreed on, though, was Charlize’s excellent performance as icy-cold commander Meredith Vickers.
6. Bombshell
One of her more recent outings, this 2019 film dramatized the behind-the-scenes ongoings at Fox News, especially where Roger Ailes and his more salacious behavior were concerned. Theron would turn in an award-contention-worthy performance in the role of beleaguered anchor Megan Kelly, who would later go on to leave the network entirely.
7. Long Shot
Charlize teamed up with Seth Rogen for this fun little romantic comedy about a schlubby reporter who falls in love with a powerful politician. This film is one of the few non-action films she has made in the last few years, so it was nice to see the change of pace here.
8. The Italian Job
This remake of the classic British crime caper is way more fun than it should be, and that’s largely owed to the all-star cast here, including Charlize as the co-leader of a team of thieves attempting to pull off one last big score.
9. The Fate of the Furious
Charlize has had a long career in cinema at this point, but she’ll be hard-pressed to ever work on a film bigger than this one. It’s the eight entry in the constantly expanding “Fast and the Furious” franchise, and she does an excellent job as the film’s villain, a hacker with sights on taking over the world.
10. The Old Guard
Charlize headlines this Netflix exclusive, which largely succeeds on the merits of two things: its intriguing storyline, about a group of immortal mercenaries, and her emotive and commanding performance.
