Sometimes, the worlds of horology and pop culture combine in exciting and intriguing ways, and when that occurs, we like to call attention to it. That is why this particular piece is going to focus on the life and career of Lady Gaga, who made history in 2017 when she became the first woman to ever star in a Tudor watch campaign.
The prolifically talented singer, songwriter, pianist, and actress has only seen her profile rise meteorically since the release of her debut album “The Fame” in 2008, and she’s since gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award for her role in “A Star is Born,” which was the first time she had ever had the lead role in a film. In honor of all of her success, let’s take a closer look at her life and achievements up to now.
Lady Gaga’s Early Years
Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, in New York City, New York to Joseph Germanotta, an Internet entrepreneur, and Cynthia, a business executive, and philanthropist. She also has a younger sister named Natali. Gaga has mentioned in several interviews that both of her parents came from lower-class families and worked very hard for everything they acquired later in life.
Gaga began playing the piano at the age of four, as her mother insisted that she become, in her words, a “cultured young woman.” She would take piano lessons throughout her childhood, and would progress to the point where she would be able to play the piano by ear. Her parents would encourage her creative endeavors and enroll her in various creative arts camps in her youth.
As a teenager, she would play open mic nights in various places around New York and also act in high school productions, including appearing as Adelaide in a production of “Guys and Dolls.”
Beginnings in The Music Business
After graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Gaga would then form a band called the SGBand with some friends from NYU. They would play various gigs around New York and soon become a well-regarded fixture of the Lower East Side club scene. After a June 2006 showcase at the Cutting Room, a prominent talent scout recommended Gaga to music producer Rob Fusari, who began collaborating with her and gave her the moniker “Lady Gaga,” a reference to the famous Queen song “Radio Gaga.”
Fusari and Gaga’s efforts at musical collaboration would certainly pay off, as Gaga would eventually be signed to Def Jam recordings in September of 2006. However, she was dropped from the label only three months later, and soon afterward, she began performing at neo-burlesque shows, which she felt allowed for a greater degree of artistic freedom.
Breakthrough Success and Mainstream Stardom
After spending several more months as an apprentice songwriter and writing songs for artists like Britney Spears and The Pussycat Dolls, Lady Gaga was finally able to release her debut album, “The Fame,” in 2008. The record was a representation of the sound and image that Gaga had spent years trying to perfect, and it reached number one in several countries rather quickly, largely based on the strength of two singles, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”
Gaga would then travel around the world touring with that record, writing eight additional songs and then re-releasing it a year later as “The Fame Monster.” She would continue touring and performing until 2011, which saw the release of her second album, “Born This Way,” which was also the name of the lead single.
In 2013, she would release her third album, “Artpop” and also make her feature film debut as an assassin named La Chameleon in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills,” though the part was effectively a cameo. However, it would signal that Lady Gaga was open to acting in films, which would prove to be important several years later.
Musically, Gaga released the albums “Joanne” in 2016 and “Chromatica” in 2020 and collaborated with Rodriguez again in “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” in 2014 before her star-making turn in Bradley Cooper’s “A Star is Born” in 2018. She was most recently seen in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” which was released in 2021, where she received rave reviews for her performance in the film.
First Woman to Star in a Tudor Advertisement
In 2017, Lady Gaga managed to be set yet another precedent when she was the first-ever woman to appear in an advertisement for Tudor Watches. It is interesting to think about the fact that a woman had not appeared in that function before that time for the company, but considering that Lady Gaga has spent much of her career being a trailblazer and someone who is constantly creating her own path, it seemed more than fitting to have her be the first-ever female spokesperson for the company.
