Launched in 1953, the Submariner was the first divers’ wristwatch waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). This was the second great breakthrough in the technical mastery of waterproofness, following the invention of the Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, in 1926. In watchmaking, the Submariner represented a historic turning point; it set the standard for divers’ watches.

Rolex released the first Submariner model in the early 1950s as a professional dive watch that could also be worn at the office or in the board room. It would go on to become one of the most recognizable and sought after models for decades after its introduction to the market.

From 2008 to 2010, Rolex transitioned from using an aluminum bezel insert on their Submariner models (16610, 14060) to fitting the new models (116610, 114060) with their patented Cerachrom ceramic bezel. The ceramic models have bigger lugs and crown guards, making them appear larger than their predecessors, even though the case still measures 40mm.

As it remains one of the most popular models, many choose to replace the Oyster bracelet of their Submariner with a fashionable and sporty luxury rubber strap.
